Difference between "follow-me" and "diversion" on MD110

Hello,

Can someone tell me the difference between "follow-me" and "diversion" ? In
the context of a business Ericsson MD110 telephone exchange.

I can setup a follow-me with the *21*xxxx# code, and a diversion through the
Ericsson Extension Manager. Both seem to do exactly the same at first
sight...

Thanks.

If it's anything like the exchange where I am, you do diversion at phone A,
causing calls made to phone A to be redirected to phone B. A follow-me
involves being at phone B, and causing calls aimed at phone A to be redirected
to phone B. Diversion needs no security step (because if you have physical
access to phone A you're assumed to be allowed to divert to B) but follow-me
needs you to demonstrate that you're the `owner' of phone A and are therefore
allowed to `pull' calls to phone B.

The end result is the same, yes.

It's not the same here. Both are done from phone A.

When I do *21*1234# from phone A, its display says "Follow me->1234" and the
divert LED om that phone lights up.

In the MD110's extension manager, I can set up one diversion number for each
phone (let's say to 1234). Now, if I press the diversion button on that
phone, its display says "Diversion->1234" and the divert LED on that phone
lights up.

So the follow-me can be setup by the end-user, and the diversion is setup by
the administrator to a fixed number (but activated by the end-user). But
apart from that, I would like to know if there is any difference.

Thanks.

John,
The idea of diversion facility in the extn manager is for the normal
diversion that would be required from that phone. This can be
immediate, on busy, on no reply, or busy & no reply. An example would
be where a manager wants his calls to be answered by his secretary, so
he operates the divert key. He has the ability to switch off the
immediate divert if required, but could have the divert on no reply or
busy left operational.

Follow me is used if you want to move your incoming calls from your
extn to another, eg if you are working somewhere else in the building.
It is possible to follow me divert calls from A to B, and then move
the calls from B to C, and so on. Depending on how the diverts are
set, the follow me should not override the normal divert. eg. calls
still get answered by the secretary, but when she calls you to
transfer the call, that call will go to the follow me extn.

Hope that helps answer your query.
Gaz
