Changing the Caller ID of a BT line

Can anyone advise me if it's possible to have the outgoing caller ID of a BT
landline modified so that it shows another number. It's for a number that a
customer of mine uses with VOIP, but sometimes they may need to use a
landline instead, but they need to give the same nunver so that incoming
calls get router correctly.

If it were the other way around then it's easy as VOIP caller ID can be set
to a BT landline provided you can prove you own it of course!

It is a service offered by BT called Presentation Number, so yes it's
possible.

Not sure if BT Retail offer it exclusively on business lines or not,
though.

Pricing
£60 connection charge
Quarterly rental £7.70 - no minimum term

I've often wondered if this would circumvent Sky's insistence of having
multi-room boxes connected to the same telephone line. The £60 set up
fee has always put me off an experiment.

I would suspect not. Presentation number is not the same as a
'network' or 'engineering' number. And it is these that I suspect
that Sky looks at.

Harry.

Hence me being unwilling to shell out £60 +VAT to experiment.

That said, Sky should have no sight whatsoever of the 'engineering'
number.

Would that still apply if one had an LLU'd line from Sky? Would they be
obliged to put up Chinese walls to stop information being shared between
departments?

Yes. I'm just guessing.

Yes - telcos are supposed to do this. However Sky ONLY (at present) LLU the
DSL side of a line - the POTS side is left with BT.

However I wouuld expect that BT will have rules as to what they will
accept as a valid presentation number for any line!

Correct

Again, correct - you have to prove you own the number.

A cheaper experiment would be to try using VoIP to do the same.

Not many successes there, either - the modems within the Sky boxes
refuse to use a baud rate that works over VoIP.
