I find it annoying though when calling 0800 numbers- some way of
'overriding' the warning would be a good idea, though don't know how it
could be implemented.

Ivor - you are making yourself look more and more like a buffoon with
your ridiculous comments about premium numbers.

Get it into your thick head that you are wrong Slick.

Let me put it this way, if someone has premium rate barring, then they
will still be able to call mobile numbers, international numbers,
directory enquiry numbers and others.

I hope you don't tell any of your gullible contacts that all numbers
apart from 'normal' numbers are premium rate numbers, because they
will be in for a nasty shock if they arrange for premium rate barring.

I await your debate sonny.

I quite specifically deliberately did not call them "premium rate services".

Its a new Ofcom obligation on originating communications providers
('OCPs') from the 1 September 2007 - originally announced in Feb 07.

Now enforceable under General Condition 17.

And about time too Sunil and should be applied to all numbers other
than standard geographical numbers and 0800/0808's if you ask me.
People are being ripped of left right and center these days with all
the money making numbers even the damned doctors and health centers
are getting in on the act with the 0844 range now whch gives them 2p
pr call received do the doctors not get paid enough money ? .

It seems to me that Ivor fully understands what a premium rate
number is in telecom terms, but prefers to apply a simple dictionary
definition of the word "premium" and for the purposes of what we
are discussing here, elderly people not realising the cost etc, such
a definition is perfectly appropriate and I agree with him.

It should be possible to dial a prefix which will trigger a charge
announcement for *any* call, and allow you to hang up before
it is connected, why don't OFCOM force all operators to
implement this?

After all, BT has had ADC for years, but that tells you how
much you have spent after you have spent it!

And IIRC, in the early days of System X, BTs ADC service
was a chargeable Star Service on a call by call basis until OFTEL
made them offer it for free.

One of the networks made you prefix an 0800 with a *
I dont think it was to suppress an anouncment though.

I thought they had been forced to provide it FOC as it was so
inaccurate.
