I have had the devil's-own job talking to BT about getting an NTE5a
fitted. Finally I have got a response (I wont bore you with the
tortuous paths required to get this far) and they say it will cost:

£99.88 per hour for engineers work plus
£116.33 Call out Fee
If the engineers is there for less than an hour you will be charged the full
hours fee.

But their Price list:

http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/p...htm#0002-d0e63

(last entry) clearly shows a price of about £30.

£216 vs £30. I'm baffled, does anyone know what the truth is? I'm
going to fit an NTE5 on a cable plugged into the existing hardwired
master if it's £216, but BT get the job if it's £30.

I only recently moved out of an NTL (VM now) area, and
find BT even worse than when I left them 10 years ago. NTL were bad,
but BT are mind-boggling.

R.

The £25 plus VAT charge will only apply if the engineer is already onsite to
provide the line, therefore charge of £125 inc VAT already raised. Note the
page also makes reference to additional work completed costing £60 per hour.

However some work has a fixed price such as converting to NTE5A & providing
extension sockets.

I think you're quite right, although it's VERY unclear in the
pricelist; the Openreach pricelist may be more explanatory

I have spoken to Openreach as part of the meanderings round BT's
varoious call centres and their queues. They don't do inside work.

Assuming I've quoted you correctly, then yes they do.

You might be right, but this email from them says, and this is cut and
paste:

:quote:
Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry to advise we would be unable to
help with your request.

The LPR team only deal with external equipment not internal. I am afraid
you would need to go back to were You started BT customer services.
:end-quote:

so even if they do inside work, they won't do it for me.

I'm fed up of worrying about this. I'm just going to do the work
myself, and then they can change me £30 for rectification of illegal
installation, when their engineer calls (at their expense) to check.
If they never send an engineer, they'll never know.

Ah ok, I don't know what the LPR team is (I could find out if you need
to know) but at least they're not claiming that none of OpenReach will
work internally.

Had me going for a minute there as well.

The biggest problem is knowing that any end user isn't an Openreach
customer, Openreach only deal with Companies, one of them being BT
(getting confused & glassy eyed, don't worry every one else does as
well).

To get a upgrade/fit an NTE5 (sorry I forget the official term) you
have to go thru your CP, in this case BT who would then approach
Openreach to do the job.

Gone are the nice easy (???? well easier) navigation to where you want
to go in order to get your particular job done. Even BT get it around
their necks & as for Openreach, they're so busy trying to comply with
equivalence it's suprising anything get's done at all on some
occaisions. On others I've got to admit the enduser gets royally
screwed (visit a BT customer with a faulty BT rented phone that's one
visit charge & an hour on site charge & the like)..

Best of luck to the OP but I do think that with a little thought you
could easily do the job yourself & do a better job than some of the
installs I have seen, just don't use any chock block ***** type
connections to extend any wiring & you won't go far wrong....

I tried ringing, but their call centre is hopeless, the droids on the
end of the line don't know their arse from their elbow. I get passed
from department to department, usually with another 15 minutes in a
queue, and when I find someone who thinks they know what I'm asking
for, it turns out they don't know their arse from the elbow again.
(This IS the short version)

Finally, I put in a complaint via their website. The price (£216)
quoted is a direct quote from their reply.

I don't really want to fit my own linebox, as it breaks the agreement,
but I feel BT are forcing me to do so by their behaviour.

R.

I think most people will be doing DIY now as they are charging way to much,
so instead of earning a little they will lose a lot.

Just get the box unscrew the old and fit the new using a few screws and
connect the two wires, job done in less the 30 mins for anyone.

Re: Getting a BT NTE5A installed

Ask for a new line to be fitted it will be cheaper that a repair and more
costly to BT.

BT are idiots at times.

They must have started fitting the NTE box outside now then, what a joke.

The NTE box and all the wires back to the exchange are their property and
they are responsible for it's repair and maintenance.

You should not have to pay to repair someone else property.

I know that's not what your asking for but they seem to be saying the box is
yours.
