Line fault?
I suspect I have come across a line fault on a BT line.
What happens is that when you pick up the line you hear the dial tone - however its not as 'loud' as it once used to be and after about 10-15 seconds it gradually fades to virtually nothing - before starting the process again.. almost like the dial tone has been automatically reset. Can anyone tell me what is likely to be the cause of the problem? I presume whatever it is should be reported to BT so they can 'fix it' before it causes a more serious problem later.. Regards Sunil |

Yes- its not 1571 etc I don't have access to the line atm so haven't been able to try another handset but don't think that is the problem either. Could it be some sort of weak battery or a bad/lose connection somewhere? (I don't know how or what generates the dial tone) Regards Sunil |

Some phones certainly take a second or two to come up to full volume when first connected to line as the amplifier powers up, particularly if they have been disconnected for a time and any internal capacitor has drained. Does the dial tone eventually time out, as you would normally expect when left off hook? |

Is the service being provided through a DACS? No. The line does has ADSL provisioned on it which is supplied by an LLU provider but the line rental/voice element is still with BT. The ADSL has been provisioned in that manner on the line for over 18 months - so I don't think that is a factor either. I should make clear that it is possible to dial out on the line as normal - its just unusual behaviour, as I would expect the dial tone to be 'constant' until the exchange started warning the phone was off hook - so am wondering what could cause this. As I posted elsewhere, I don't have access to the line atm so haven't been able to try another handset but will hopefully be able to do so later today. I do know that this problem was heard on a BT DECT handset, but if it was an amplifier would you get the 'resetting' symptom? I will have to try with a wired telephone and see if the same issue occurs.. Regards Sunil |
