DECT phone - recommendation?

Hi,

I'm in the market to get a new DECT phone, preferably one with two
handsets, and one whose handsets can register to more than one base
station and can switch between the two.

(the old base station on my Tesco VoIP line, the new one on my BT line)

The iDECT X1i claims in the manual to be able to do this, but in reality
it can't, according to their tech support line. So it'll be going back for
a refund.

Answerphone capability isn't too important, text messaging irrelevant.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks,

I'm under the impression that Tesco now supports SIP, so how about a
DECT system that also supports SIP directly, rather than go through an
ATA?

Eg. The Siemens C460IP, or the S450IP? The 460 supports one SIP account
and the 450 up to 6 (I think). You can select which account or the use
of the analogue connection from any handset, and it can make/take
multiple calls on differenet handsets at the same time...

The base stations are totally separate from the handsets, so these can
be located anywhere convenient.

I've bought & installed several from these people:

http://www.provu.co.uk/siemens.html

And if you go down the S450IP route, then it opens up the possibilities
for using many more SIP providers than just Tesco - most of which are a
lot cheaper too...

Any GAP phone should be able to switch base stations, but I
doubt you'd find one that can do it automatically. Usually,
it's done through an option in the settings menu. You
really need a two-line arrangement (expensive DECTsys2200)
or else a two-line PBX. Alternatively, use a VoIP adaptor
that can connect to a landline as well.

I've got it working with kiax (softphone) under Linux - but Ekiga (a SIP
client) can't connect to the server, it just times out.

Update: using "sip.tescointernetphone.com" and my regular login details
lets Ekiga log in - and the call sound quality is better than kiax.

I see that Tesco have the Siemens dual phones on offer.

Can they be used with any SIP account, or are they in some way locked?

My ISP gives me 250 minutes of 01/02 numbers a month as part of my broadband
package and it would be great to use them.

Thanks Phil

Old protocols never die. They just get migrated over TCP/IP.

Thank you for the advice. After doing a bit of research I got one of these
beasties, and so far it's working really well

I like my Panasonic KX-TCD223ES it may no longer be sold, but you can select
the base stations.
