This is quite interesting, I do wonder why there has to be a "right"
or "wrong" way, surely it is what is customary, in some places top
posting is what is the usual way, but seeing as some people who post
to groups like this are not particularly computer savvy I think you
will get people doing things like top posting, not deleting long, long
posts, not being very clear in what they mean, using language that
some of us might find a little offensive and the like. The idea is to
choose to not let it get to you, I think it is very easy to take
things the wrong way when texting, emailing or posting to web groups
so I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, though sometimes it
is quite clear than some aim to be offensive - not naming anyone!! :-)

I have always thought it was because when USENET started most users were
at academic institutions (i.e. someone else paying the bill) and quite
possibly using paper printouts so easier to add comments at the end.

It all gets very boring now, if I see a screen full of text then I
usually go to the next messsage rather than scroll all the way to the
bottom.

Yes, quite. That's why bottom posting (or better still, inline posting)
works well only when the poster takes the time to edit the content
properly.

And why top posting never works, as you have to scroll down to see what
the previous poster (who had probably bottom posted) said.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on Usenet and in e-mail?
