You seem quite 'touchy' about the subject, why doesn't Gibraltar just join Spain instead, are they not the rightfull owner of Gibraltar? ;o) Mike |

I have received international caller ID on several occasions. It is not common, but does happen. It is a question of whether the telco trusts the calling telco or not. -- Adrian Kennard, on his Mac... Andrews & Arnold Ltd. [Gib having been assigned +350 by the ITU ages ago.] Spain blocked +350 for many years, and made Gib numbers available to Spanish citizens as if they were 3 sub blocks of the area code for the neighbouring Spanish region. Number blocks: +34-956-77****, +34-956-74**** and +350-956-75****. This limited the number of numbers available locally that could be dialled from Spain. Though the pressure did easy towards the end, as the separation of circuits from dialable numbers came into full effect. The shortage was at its most acute when fax machines ruled the world and when every line had a dial able number to function (i.e. before line capacity in small PBXs was separated from number pool. [There were tests with numbers that could not be recognised in Spain, but would be anywhere else, however there were routing problems as foreign telcos often tried to reroute traffic through the Spanish shaddowing scheme to get better volume rates when combined with all their traffic to spain.] However the +44**** shaddowing scheme was resisted by the telecoms industry mostly due to billing and charge advice reasons. --- Anyway, Spain finally agreed to recognise +350 in the last year. And that recognition is up and working now. As a result number length will be expanded in December this year (2007). To introduce more structure and allow companies to have direct dialable desk numbers for each staff member, etc >From Dec 07, 5 digit numbers will be prefixed with '200': e.g. +350 41234 will become +350 200-41234 Mobiles are already 8 digit numbers (+350 5*******) and will not change. |

Why should just 1 border in Europe be redrawn to how it was over 300 years ago just because one country thinks it wants it (against the wishes of the indigenous population). I'd love to see the look on the Americans face when the turn up and say they want Florida back. I say Spain 'thinks' it wants it because Spain has mainly used Gibraltar as a national rallying cry to try and hold their country together (where there are significant independence movements for various regions). This only really began in recent times under dictator Franco, who was the first to use it for this purpose. Prior to then, things had been friendly for some time. Sadly following Francos death, the question of Gibraltar was not put into the 'lets be modern' pile, but erroneously put into this is something (an idea) we can keep and don't need to burn. Anyway, Spains claim would be third at best if decided by period of time, Gib has been british longer than it was 'spanish' and have been Moorish longer than anything else in recorded history. But lets not bring the question of Spains north african enclaves into this..... Don't want to take this off topic so will stop here. (and i did try and take my other reply back ontopic - a bit with the 200 prefix. |
