Strange Number On Bill. Even BT could not answer.
Checked my mothers BT bill today and there was a 25p call to a number that
could not be dialled. The number was 12345678 Now for a company that INSIST they DO NOT make mistakes this is an odd one. As I was calling them for another reason, I asked the lady what this number was, and even after speaking to a colleague, she could not tell me. Perhaps it was a calling card she said. Apart from the fact that my 79 year old mum, would not know how to use one, most calling cards are 0800 numbers, as they are prepaid (Unless they are the rip off 09XXX ones) handed out on street corners. Even so, this would show on her bill as a correct number. Has anyone any idea what this was? As BT insist they never make mistakes, should I send it to OFCOM? Thanks For Any Pointers. Mike |

Of course the number can be dialled from a BT landline 123 is the Speaking Clock, anything you dial after that just gets ignored. What is odd is that the digits after the 123 appear on the bill. -- Graham %Profound_observation% |

Thanks so much Graham,
I was about to have a right old go at them. When I spoke to them even they were not bright enough to give me the answer. Thanks again. Only question left now is, how come within six hours of having a new line (With Privacy option) she got a recorded advertisement, trying to sell her a way to right off all her debts (Which she has none) Even though I love BT, they are far from perfect. Thanks Again Mike |

There is a finite supply of numbers, and these people just autodial their way through the list of possible numbers. Owain |

Privicy part is done by TPS, and it takes them a month to propagate the data out to all members, although a recorded advertisement probably came from abroad in order to bypass the TPS. -- Andrew Gabriel [email address is not usable -- followup in the newsgroup] |
