do the displays not show which line, or does it need to be audible ?

If the display shows which line is ringing it's fine.

Presumably both connecting to the same Exchange, possibly via the same
DSLAM and via the same Pole and same route?

Personally I have an ADSL line and a cable broadband as backup.

Of course you may not have access to cable ....

Yes, same exchange, route and pole, but different DSLAMs, also on differing
service level agreements.

One of the adsl lines is with $ky, and for a one off 40 quid, gives me a 1Gb
per month adsl line - perfect for accessing work systems if the other is
down (which only happens for about 48 hrs ever 2 yrs in my experience)
