SMS to UK landlines
I'm developed a PC application to send SMS text messages to mobiles &
UK landlines (via SMPP) and to generate a delivery report when the message is delivered. Our SMS service provider tells us that for landlines then the recipient must have a BT fixed line. When sending a message to a landline then the delivery report is generated within 3 seconds of the message being submitted. The message might not be delivered for many minutes later and, in some cases, doesn't get delivered even after many days. (For mobiles then delivery reports are generated when the message is delivered.) Q1) Is this immediate delivery report commonplace when texting landlines? Am I able to change this behaviour? Q2) Is it BT that generates the delivery report or the particular service provider? Q3) Why do positive delivery reports seem to get generated when the destination can't accept text messages? Q4) Bearing in mind that recipients needs a BT fixed line, which of the big UK service providers should be able receive texts from us? Q5) Do the big service providers generally support delivery of the text message as a voice message where the landline recipient doesn't have a phone that can display text messages? |

I may be complicated by the recipients choice of delivery. Landline texts can be handled by BT for no BT line where they call and read the message. However for a BT line the recipient can received as a data call and process as such. I am not sure if this does proper delivery reports or immediate one. A line that "cannot receive a text" makes little sense as the fallback is to call and read it, and any line that can answer the call can receive a text. -- Adrian Kennard, on his Mac... Texting my Telewest (Virgin Media) home phone does not work whether I do it from my application or my mobile phone. However, I still get a delivery report when texting from the application. |

Cable phonelines can receive SMS text, they use the BT Text service, just set up your landline phone following the details from BT or VM for your phone, it's the same service centre numbers. I receive SMS on my SMS phone ok on a xTelewest cable line. Might be worth checking the settings on the phone. -- 3 Issues of PC Pro for £1 Plus Free Toolkit http://www.dodgy-dealer.co.uk/pcpro |
