Can I copy podcast files into my iTunes podcast directory

I have podcast files that I have downloaded with another downloader; I'd
like to get them in my iTunes environment. Can I just copy the files from
their current location in the file system into the appropriate directory
where iTunes keeps the podcasts it downloads?

You need to have iTunes import it into its library, which it won't do
automatically just by putting it into the directory structure. It sounds
like you're having iTunes do the file management, so simply importing it
normally should cause iTunes to copy the file into its directory itself,
whereupon you can delete the original. (If you instead have iTunes not
doing file management, then you would still need to import it, but there
would be no copy, it would simply use the file wherever you put it.)
