Speed up browsing by DNS cache

Each time u browse a web site on the internet,

the actual site name u type is resolved to an ip address.

This translation is effected through what is called the

DNS (Domain Name System).

This DNS information is stored in ur computer so that each time u type a web address ,

a record of its IP address is stored so that it can be recalled later without having to retrieve it again.

1 way to speed up ur browsing experience is to increase this DNS cache in windows XP.

u will need to modify registry for this .

Start notepad & enter following text into it :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es|Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtILimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtILimit"=dword:0000012d

Save this file ,naming it dnscache.reg .

Double click on the file in windows explorer & merge it into ur registry.

:@ Thilak,

May be u r not seeing the options while saving in the notepad.

it must be saved as "all files", not with a text file option,

and may be u have missed one or two lines from the code.

For those that get errors try with this exact code
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtILimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtILimit"=dword:0000012d
For firefox there is "network.dnsCacheEntries" and "network.dnsCacheExpiration". it's not related to the registry.
Another way is to eliminate DNS delay is to store the IP address of some frequently visited sites in your host file.
Go to %systemroot%\drivers\etc
Make a backup of the hosts file.
Open the hosts file using notepad.
it should like
Type the IP address followed by the domain name.
like

save the file.
Note:- This is also a very good method to stop users browsing on a computer to visit ceratin sites which may be related to **** or illegal downloads or spywares/viruses.
Say the site you want to block is www.blocksite.com
then add this line to your hosts file
127.0.0.1 www.blocksite.com
