Cool Reset Root Password in SUSE Linux 10.1 and other Distributions

Hello,

You've installed all new SUSE 10.1. Played with it for a few days. One day you just forgot the root password. God what shall i do!!!!!! Ok here is the normal method which should work in all distros.

Single User Mode Method

1. At the GRUB boot menu select the linux option and press 'e' .

2. Choose your kernal and press 'e' once more.

3. Here in the Edit mode add the following to the end of the line leaving a space.

Quote:
single
or

Quote:
1
4. Press ENTER to exit the edit mode. Once back at the GRUB screen, press 'b' to boot into single user mode.

5. This will make you the "root" user without asking for a password. Once the system has booted, you can change the root password using the password command in the prompt:

Quote:
passwd

SUSE Linux 10.1 Method

1. At the GRUB boot menu select the linux option and press 'e' .

2. Nothng happend!! Ok you cann't edit it from here in this release. But instead SUSE provides a method to Enter you boot code. Select the SUSE entry in the startup GRUB screen. Look for Boot Options in the bottom of the window. You can just type in the boot options here..

3. So in Boot Options enter the following.

Quote:
init=/bin/sh

4. Press ENTER to boot.

5. Once the system has booted, you can change the root password using the password command in the console:

Quote:
passwd
6. Enter your new password and confirm it. Type in to reboot.

Quote:
reboot

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu

On Dapper Drake, it just boots into X and you have to log in as a user as normal.

Re: Reset Root Password in SUSE Linux 10.1 and other Distributions

I just recently lost the password for login into root on our SuSE Linux 10. I followed the above steps for the SuSE Linux 10.1 method. However, after I entered in the init=/bin/bash command in the Boot Options line, the keybaord gets disabled and I am unable to continue on to the next steps. How do keep the keyboard from getting disabled?

You can try using the Recovery CD/DVD for resetting the root account password.
