Remove shortcut arrow from desktop icons

Here's how you can remove those shortcut arrows from your desktop icons in Windows XP.

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.

You may need to restart Windows XP.

Well a bit of it is just simply reading the registry key names and using common sense.

When you open regedit, you see 5 main keys :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT : contains all the different types of file extensions, which extension is associated with what files, the CLSID's etc etc.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER : contains the settings for the current user that is logged in (if i am not mistaken this is probably absent in 98 or ME)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE : contains the major part of the software settings, the System settings, your control sets (including Last known good recovery mode, etc etc) and by far is the most important part of the Windows registry. Most system tweaks and performance enhancements are done here.

HKEY_USERS : just the no. of users, their priviledges, etc etc

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG : your current configuration. btw .. is this also present in XP ?

There are many registry tweaks that you can do to tweak Windows ... just search ...... and if you are not too confident with the Windows registry don't try your own modifications
