GMail Account into a Virtual Hard Drive
by http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again.

When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer. You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Installation Guide

* Extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder.
* Run the Setup application.

The final step is to configure the GMail Drive. Open the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Inside, you will see an icon for GMail Drive. Right-click on it and choose Login As... Type your username and password. Then check the box that says "Auto-login". Next, click the "More" button and check the box that says "Use Secure HTTP". Choose OK. Your GMail Drive is now ready for use! You can save your files to it, or copy files to it, just as you would with any other drive on your PC. Install GMail Drive on your home and work PCs, and you'll have a way to easily transfer files between the two sites.
Your GMail Drive is secure, but I wouldn't trust it with important personal data, such as financial files. Nevertheless, it's a great place to backup documents or photos. You can even get yourself a generic GMail account to share files with friends and family! Have fun!

I wanted to start a filesharing service with this when i first used this app long back. result of which a friend of mine made this really cool website with an amazing concept of storing files. www.gshare.in. and i had done some research of my own on this application

You will probably realise that only those files which are uploaded through GMailFS will be visible in the drive and If you already have some file in your inbox as attachments, and want them to be visible in your Gmail Drive you should know the following:

1) Gmail drive recosnises files in your email id by the prefix of [b]GMAILFS: /[b]. a file name lucky ali - o sanam.zip when uploaded through GmailFS, the email in your inbox will read something like GMAILFS: /Lucky_Ali_-_O_Sanam.mp3 [3850240;a;1]

2) so for any file to be visible in your gmail drive, the subject title should be the following GMAILFS: /filename [filesize;a;1]

please note the filename and filesize need not be accurate.

3) so if you have a file named turboc.zip of size 2.7mb, just forward it to yourslf or anyone with a subject title as GMAILFS: /turboc.zip [2380267;a;1]

4) and if the new email appears as a sort of ...submail or continuation of a conversation as it does in gmail (im not sure if im being clear here ), just delete the previous email, so that the new mail with the appropriate subject title pops up at the top. lol use your head.

;a;1] << has some significance, but i never had the time to figure it out
