Workaround : Adobe Flash Player 10 installation bug for Firefox - "required 5000KB free disk space"

Adobe has recently released Adobe Flash Player 10

However, there's a bug in the installer for the plugin for browsers Firefox/Opera/Netscape that gives an error that you required 5000KB free disk space to continue installation, and the installation fails.

This bug typically happens to those who do not have a C drive (partition with C drive letter).

There are two possible workarounds :

1. Insert any USB/pen/removable drive. Windows will assign it drive letter C and now run the installer.

2.
a. In Firefox address bar type : about:plugins
and note down the location of the NPSWF32.dll file. This will point to the previous version of Flash Plugin installed. Close Firefox and open Explorer and browse to that folder location.
b. Rename NPSWF32.dll to NPSWF32.dll.bak
c. Open the downloaded install_flash_player.exe file using 7-Zip and extract the NPSWF32.dll file to the folder where NPSWF32.dll was previously present. Start Firefox and type about:plugins and note down the version of the Shockwave Flash Plugin. It should be v10.

If you don't find the NPSWF32.dll file, go to the Firefox installation directory, there's a plugin folder and place the extracted NPSWF32.dll from the flash installation file, inside the plugins folder.

It's a rare scenario, right? Never seen a computer without a C: drive.

I myself don't have one :d that is how I faced the situation. My drive letters start from J
It can happen in cases where you previously had a hdd, buy a new hdd, install OS on new hdd and remove older hdd !!

Just remove the old HDD first? Wouldn't that make sense ?

No, with the old hard disk removed initially, Windows setup will automatically assign C drive to the first partition of the new hard disk.

Re: Workaround : Adobe Flash Player 10 installation bug for Firefox - "required 5000KB free disk spa

Hi,

I am having this same problem installing Flash Player 10. I tried to use your workaround method, however I have encountered a problem: my computer says there is a removable storage device in drive C: even when there is no removable storage plugged in. An other storage devices I plug in become drive F:, so I am unable to use your workaround method.

Would you be able to suggest anything different to help me? I am using a new computer which currently has no Flash player, so it is important I can resolve this issue quickly.

Thanks in advance.

Open Device Manager, go to View -> Show Hidden devices, Now look under "Disk Drives", "Storage Volumes" and "USB controllers" and uninstall any hidden device that you see. Now reconnect the usb drive, it should get drive letter C:

Thanks for the prompt reply, but I have encountered another problem: whenever I uninstall the devices, Windows says I need to restart the computer for any changes to take effect. But, whenever it restarts, it re-installs all the devices.

Do not restart, after uninstalling, plug in the new device.

Also open diskmgmt.msc and see if any device is occupying the C drive letter.

Re: Workaround : Adobe Flash Player 10 installation bug for Firefox - "required 5000KB free disk spa

Thanks for all your help so far, but even when there is no drive C (which I renamed to drive L to see if it would work), anything new that is plugged into the computer is labelled as drive F.
Could I rename my Hard Disk (drive E) to C, or would this muck up my computer?
