The network settings listed in this topic have little, to nothing, to do with this. Depending on what server your Firefox is fetching the pages from, it might actually slow down your browsing; also depending on your internet connection. Basically like someone here said, Firefox is already optimized.

What can actually speed up your browsing are some extensions (Add-ons, for example), like the NoScript and Adblock Plus, by blocking access to some sites, in order to improve loading speeds. Adblock Plus can be installed together with the Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper add-on & then automatic subscriptions can be added @

Code:
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/
Eye use teh 4:
  1. EasyList, The main ad-blocker subscription (necessary)
  2. EasyPrivacy, Additional tracking & privacy invasion blocker
  3. Adult/Dating Blocking (by fanboy), For blocking adult and dating ads
  4. Rickroll Blacklist (by Jamie Wilkinson), If you need to ask, you don't need it
P.S.
Just see the discussions for yourself, it's not just an opinion of mine. xd

Re: improve the speed of Firefox 3

For me EasyList does the job. But if you need total blocking use the NoScript addon. It's a bit annoying but you can browse safely at office or home without a pron ad popping up!
