Install Ubuntu from one HDD to another?

The situation is this: I have two HDDs. One of them has a year old
install of Dapper Drake. I have downloaded 7.10 from Ubuntu's website.
But I don't have a CD-ROM drive. Is there any possible way to "install"
7.10 to the second HDD, (which is empty), from it's ISO image on the
first HDD?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Hello,

I'm not entirely sure, but could try to mount the iso file and start the
install application from there...I've never done something like this
with Ubuntu, but I guess that the install application from the Live CD
is nothing else then a 'normal' application.

There's a 'How Too' here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...boot+installer

using the Netboot Installer I've never used this myself but it might
give you some ideas/pointers.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice; In
practice, there is.

In what may be a similar situation, I used a partition manager to copy
one partition from one HDD to another. If you load a live CD, you can
access the partition manager easily and do it from there, In this way, I
didn't have to erase the source until I was sure the image was copied
and functional. The problem I did have was with Grub due to a difference
between partition locations between drives. Hope this helps,
Richard

Sure, but it'll take a day or so.

Re: Install Ubuntu from one HDD to another?

Here's a trick someone taught me today: Install VMWare on your current
system. Create a virtual machine under VMWare with your target drive as
the vm's hda drive. Boot the install cd (or iso image) on the virtual
machine and install from there.

I'd like to cut out the middle man if I could though. Is it not
possible to mount a CD drive and simply run the install process from
the command line? In an ideal world, I wouldn't even have to do this
as root, preventing accidental erasure of the host operating system.
