ifconfig is comparable to ipconfig in windows

ifconfig reports the machine's local network i/p address. If the OP
needs to know the current external (internet) address, use:
http://www.ipchicken.com
or
http://whatismyip.org

Or, if you are troubleshooting and your nameserver is b0rken, it is
useful to have a 'whatismyip' type link to access which doesn't require
name resolution. The chicken's webserver works by the IP address link.
Many do not.

Good advice. Google also has a little doo-dad you can add to a custom
search page that will display your IP ..

ISP assigned ip address:

Router assigned ip address:

I can browse to my router's IP address and the management system there
tells me my external IP :-)

To get the plain IP address, without having to extract it from
surrounding cruft: <http://cfaj.freeshell.org/ipaddr.cgi>; e.g.:

ip=$( wget -qO - http://cfaj.freeshell.org/ipaddr.cgi )
ip=$( lynx -dump http://cfaj.freeshell.org/ipaddr.cgi )

There are two ways available to find the ip address.First is to find your ip address through command line means follow the instruction below

Type ifconfig -a

Second method is finding ip address through online sites.
