Trying Linux (Ubuntu) - failed miserably

I just downloaded ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso

I understood that, if I burned this to a CD, my computer would boot
from the CD to the LINUX (ubuntu) OS.

Folders on the CD are:
.disc
dists
doc
install
isolinux
pics
pool
preseed
Files on the CD are:
cdromupgrade
md5sum.txt
README.diskdefines
ubuntu

When I boot from the CD, there are seven options:
Install in text mode
OEM Install (for manufacturers)
Install a common Linux system
Check CD for defects
Rescue a broken system
Memory test
Boot from first hard disk

None of them, as far as I can see, will boot my computer in Ubunto
(Linux?). The last one (Boot from first hard disk) boots the system
to Windows XP.

What am I doing wrong?
Am I getting off on the wrong foot already?

Thanks for any suggestions!

You have inadvertently downloaded the iso that will /not/ do as you
were imagining. I guess you were planning on trying Ubuntu simply from
the cd /without/ installing it? For this you need the Live CD not the
alternate CD.

Try:

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

and /don't/ select the alternate cd. You can still install with the
alternate cd but the 'try before you buy' of the Live CD is not there.

You downloaded the wrong CD. You want the LiveCD.

"alternate" is not the version you want. Just download the "desktop"
version: that will boot Ubuntu from the CD.

Hint. The word alternate, and lack of the word live. ;-) You need a copy of
the live cd.

It is a real problem until one get used to it. All these options.

BTW the install option will boot your PC right into ready for install.

Re: Trying Linux (Ubuntu) - failed miserably

I guess Jo and Andrew are right, I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 last night and
installed it on a PIII-500 with 384 MB RAM and had no problems related to
the OS, only some trouble due to faulty hardware.

Didn't have time to do an in-depth study of Ubuntu last night, but it seems
like an OK system, though it's not easy to use in 1024x768 when you are used
to higher resolutions. But it seemed impossible to use a higher resolution,
maybe due to the hardware.

Good luck!

If that hardware can run at a higher resolution than 1024x768 in Windoze, it
certainly can do the same in Ubuntu. It'll just require some tweaking.

Cheers.

Nice job for this evening! But maybe the graphical card doesn't allow for a
higher resolution. This is a municipal left-over PC...

Thanks!

Thank you, Andrew, and all the others who replied.
This certainly seems to be a newsgroup with a lot of friendly and
helpful people.

I have downloaded the Live CD, and the computer boots from it, using
Ubuntu.
There are other issues now (the main and first one being that my
screen (a 19" LCD) shows an error message "Out of Range" which I have
not been able to get rid of, so far.

However, I'll soldier through, see what I can do, and come back for
more help if I can't get anywhere.

Thanks to all!

Good.

Have you tried selecting the second boot option ("safe graphcis" or
something like that). If that does not work, select boot options (F1, or
F2, or F3) and say that you want 800x600
