Ubuntu 7.10 hangs during install

Aloha !
Although I ran Redhat 5.2 several lifetimes ago, I still see myself as
a Linux newbie - patience requested !!

Situation : In trying to install 7.10 on a PC with XP on the first
approx. 150gb of a 350gb SATA drive, the install process hangs at the
"Where are you ? " stage. After selecting my city, the screen just
sits there ! Clicking the "Install" box at the bottom-left of the
screen takes me to the desktop, clicking on the 'Install" icon there
takes me back to the "Where are you ? " page.

I assume this is a hardware problem, so, here is what I have :
AMD X2 4200+ CPU
Asus M2R32-MVP Mobo
2gb Corsair 800gh DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 2006 PCIe Video card
350gb Maxtor SATA HD with ca.150gb partition running XP, the
remainder of the drive unpartitioned, ie. free. I intend to assign the
'free' space to Ubuntu.

7.10 runs fine from the ISO as a liveCD but hangs while installing..

Any ideas ??

Regards, boo

Use the "alternate" installation CD.

Dan C illuminated alt.os.linux.ubuntu by typing:

Absolutely.

Why though? And how?
Well, the LiveCD is designed to run just from RAM and the
CD. The "alternative" installation CD is designed to just give you a
hard drive install.

You can download it from the downloads page at ubuntu.com
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Select the version you want
You'll see a tick box under the green Start Download button
Make sure this is selected.

Don't worry about the term "text based installer". It is a very
intuitive installation routine. In my view, it's more intuitive than
the LiveCD graphical installer.

Good luck.
