Trying to install Yahoo Messenger with GDebi

When I try to do this I get a message that YM needs libssl0.9.6 which
is unavailable. My 7.10 installation does, however, contain an
installation of libssl0.9.8 which I assume is just an updated version.
Is there any way to get GDebi or KDebi or KPackage to force an install
with the newer version of this library???

Just a thought, have you tried pidgin? It's in the repositories and is
YM capable.

$ sudo apt-get install pidgin

Thanks for responding: I do use pidgin, and have tried Kopete as well
but YM provides some functions which nothing else does, like audible
notification of events in my Yahoo calendar. My real need here is to
get this package issue solved.

That libssl0.9.6 problem has apparently continued through several
releases of Ubuntu, so this old post elsewhere may help :-

The version of yahoo messenger available for ubuntu is very old and
should not be used. Try one of the other compatible programs such as
pidgen or kopete.

as the "Ram" between my ears doesn't always work so well...
