Daemon Tools a Malware?
Hello group
I was interested what daemon tools was all about and I downloaded a version of it in Rar and extracted it. What happen was the extracted folder was Empty and supposed contents was not even extracted. Daemon Tools V 4.10x86 32 bit with SPTD 1.50. and the extracted folder was empty. When I tried to open the folder Daemon folder is not accessible or access denied. Therefore I tried to delete it but it won't move! Even when I cut an paste it to another removable drive which I can reformat it won't budge. This worries me and would like to ask if there is anyway to remove a stubborn folder from my files. TIA Roy |

It had finished extracting the file and when I tried to open the file it said Access denied. Therefore if I can't open it then better put it in the garbage...To my surprise it was a stubborn file that was not remove even by the software called Move on Reboot. Even Unlocker can't find a handle so that it can be loosened up and removed. I tried renaming the file by normal means and by the Move on Reboot but was unsuccessful. I tried to delete it several times even after many rebooting but was unsuccessful. I had scanned this with antivirus and antispyware tools but they can't recognize a virus....in my file right now...meaning that this is just plain stubborn empty file...? Cannot delete the file,,,,,,Access Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. BTW I am not well used to troubleshooting things by Safe Mode, could somebody guide me through it in stepwise manner? The file that I am going to remove is in the D drive. TIA Roy |

The file that I am > going to remove is in the D drive. enter safe mode by pressing the f8 key while booting (just hold it down the whole time) and when the boot options menu comes up choose safe mode or safe mode command prompt... regular safe mode will give you access to windows explorer so you should be able to delete things normally... the command prompt version will require you to type "del " and then the full path and filename to delete files or "rm " and the full path to remove directories (folders)... -- "it's not the right time to be sober now the idiots have taken over spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?" |

Re: Daemon Tools a Malware?
At boot up, hit F8 about once a second until the boot options screen comes
up. Select command prompt only and hit enter. At the C:/ prompt type "D:" and hit ENTER, this puts you on the D: drive. Type cd\windows\system32 or cd\1stdir\seconddir\thirdetc ENTER. type cd\ to get back to root dir. Type attrib -r -s -h -a filename.ext (file to delete) assuming it has 8.3 name. If it has a more than 8 letter name, you may have to type dir 1stpartof file (file*.*) to get the DOS 8.3 name, which may be something like filena~1.ext. Now you should be able to delete the offending file. However, the file may re-appear if you didn't precede all this by turning off system restore before you re-booted, to do that search system restore. To delete file, del filena~1.ext. I probably forgot something. What I described was: 1. turn off system restore 2. boot to command prompt only, F8. 3. log on D: drive and navigate to directory. 4. remove system, read only, hidden, archive attributes of offending file. 5. delete the file 6. reboot and restore system restore. 7. You may have to search the registry with regedit, but I didn't get into that. 8. didn't mention this, but hit cntrl-alt-del and see active files to make sure file isn't still active, maybe use Codestuff Starter to edit startup, or RUN msconfig. |

"rd" removes directories in dos/win. well i'll be a monkey's uncle, you're right, rm doesn't work... rmdir does, however... i mistakenly thought the short version of it was rm rather than rd... -- "it's not the right time to be sober now the idiots have taken over spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?" |
