Which Java component to keep?
I have XP, do a 'add-remove' and look at Java
entries. I have 5 Java entries: Java 6 Update 3, 5 and 6. and Java SE Runtime Environ. 6 and Java SE Runtime Env. 6 update 1 I've heard to delete old versions of Java. I guess these are all version 6, so I keep them? |

I installed it, and uninstalled Update 4, and there were leftovers. RB RB |

Went to the 'check Java version' at java.com (Google Java Test). And it said I had the latest version. |

| I wonder, would it make any difference if you just uninstalled all java, | and then loaded the newest version? It seems like a cleaner way of doing | things? | | Thoughts on this welcome. | No, it doesn't and I have experimented with office systems which could have as many as 8 v4, v5 and v8 versions installed. The interesting thing concerns security. I will send you a PM of an important thread. However for this group I will state there has been many concerns about older version installed and malware deliberately testing for different Java versions and using an array of exploits against them. I brought this concept to an IA engineer who runs Digital eEye and Harris Stat scans and asked him why they don't flag the older versions. The reason I was given was the latest version has patch information which will traverse the various older versions and patch them for vulnerability mitigation. This being said, I still think it is prudent to remove older versions only only keep the most recent version of Sun Java. Being in envoronment that uses many web based and java aplet based programs and utilities, I find that keeping the numbers of versions reduced to one reduces the problems the various web abseed and Java applets have. There are situatuations where I am seeing WHY Sun does NOT remove older version when installing the latest version. Some software such as Apple Quicktime will place a Java Jar (using ZIP extension) in the JRE runtime folder. QuickTime will then set an environmental variable that points to this ZIP file. Unfortunately, if you delete the older Sun Java folders manually, the environmental variable will no longer point to said ZIP file. The following is from my Win2K environmental variable listing... I have no idea what that Quicktime component does, and I was thinking of just deleting it and removing the variable. Instead, I moved it to my newest Java directory and changed the environment variable to point to the new location. Then I deleted all the Java directories but the newest. That was short-sighted of both Sun and Apple. Users shouldn't have to jump through those kinds of hoops. Most people wouldn't know how. |
