Windows 7

Re: Anyone tried Windows 10 yet?

Yup, I agree.
People were bringing me their comps & I was ripping 8 right out & replacing it with 7.
Windows 10 is a welcomed release.

Re: Anyone tried Windows 10 yet?

Got my Desktop (8.1 Pro to 10 Pro) and Laptop (10 Pro Insider 10130 to 10 Pro) upgraded to final build... So far so good. Had a little bit of a problem with the upgrade of 8.1 via Windows update but that was quickly sorted.

Re: Anyone tried Windows 10 yet?

Cute!
I've been a Windows 7 user for a while, and have gotten used to it. It's still a PITA compared to XP, but you gotta use what's available.

I started using Windows 10 when the Technical Preview came out. Didn't use it much, just sorta played with it. It seemed OK.

Then I upgraded my production machine to 10 and, I'm sorry, but its another PITA.

For example, if I open and position a window in 7, then close it and open another window, it opens where I originally positioned it. In 10, the new windows ALWAYS move down and to the right - ALWAYS. That's a major annoyance. There are times I want to set the screen up to perform a task that involves opening a lot of windows, one after the other, and I want them to stay where I put them to begin with. In 7, fine. In 10, fergit it.

Just one small example, but there are many others.

The bottom line is that each new release of Windows makes some jobs harder than previous releases and 10 is no exception. I'll eventually end up using it, because after 2019, that's all there will be, but I really wish they'd stop doing that. Design for the sake of design, and for bragging rights to one's peers, is annoying and useless. They should simply upgrade 7 to the 10 security standard, and forget all this tile crap and the fancy graphics. We don't need it. I would have thought they had learned their lesson with 8, but I guess not.

Re: Anyone tried Windows 10 yet?

I'm starting to think if I can get Solidworks and Adobe CS to run stably under Wine I may just switch everything over to Linux! That's a headache for another day though.

Davnel I haven't run into the issue you're describing, but I agree there are many little annoyances. A lot of features have been oversimplified IMO - for instance the calculator in 7 used to have the unit converter as an extension on the side - now it displays only one or the other.

I'll throw in one more tidbit. If you have been following my rants, especially the Win 7 V XP diatribe, you will have noticed a complaint that 7 wouldn't run a critical piece of software I use to design circuitry and printed circuit boards, namely Protel.

Well, I tried installing Protel 99SE on the Windows 10 system, and IT WORKED! It's also a lot more stable than even under XP.

So, that's at least one reason to switch. It also works great on my laptop under 10. Now I can finally wipe the XP disks (I still have Acronis images).

One last point: in the past I have noted that Windows 8 messed up Windows 7 data disks to the point where Windows 7 wanted to run chkdsk on any drive that had been written to by Windows 8 (or 8.1). With Windows 10 this no longer seems to be the case. A disk written by Windows 10 plays very nicely with Windows 7, so far.
Cheers,
.
