it is present under msconfig -> start up tab.

Look under the "command" coloumn.
The entry will be :
C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe /autorun
You need to uncheck the corresponding entry.

or right click on the Windows sidebar tray icon, click Properties and uncheck the option "Start Sidebar when Windows start"

thanks for the response.

But as I wrote earlier that in windows7 beta b.7000, the sidebar option is not listed in command column under the msconfig.

further, sidebar/desktop gadgets does not have icon in the tray icon area.
It is amazing but the fact is that u will not find the sidebar's icon at "icon tray area".

these options were well found in vista but not in win7 beta build 7000.

Hope anyone will guide the solution.

you can right click on the sidebar itself and select "Properties" and proceed.

or download and run Autoruns. Go to the Logon tab, and it should list Windows Sidebar. just uncheck that option.

or open regedit and the entry should be in this location :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

Dear Bakuryu

It seems that all your suggestion/solution is based on vista and not on win7 beta.

Please suggest when having hand on win7 beta.

If I am wrong then please post the snapshot of your solution.

The entry should be shown in Autoruns. The registry location might have changed, but quite difficult to assume that Sidebar is not detected in Autoruns too, considering the registry structure is still NT based.

And I am already downloading the official beta released yesterday on MSDN and technet and due to my slow download speed, dowloading the iso image around 2GB takes around 2 to 3 days

Re: How to enable and disable windows sidebar program at startup?

Hey bodmas. I just registered here because I too was looking for a way to turn off the sidebar in Windows 7. I found just as you did that there didn't seem to be anyway to shut it off and after clicking the "x" to get rid of all the gadgets I now worry that this is still running in the background. I immediately turned to Google, the answer to every PC problem only to find a ton of results for Vista but almost nothing for Windows 7. Yours was one of the ones I found.

I then decided to do something crazy... I checked the Windows Help and Support section! I've never actually used a program (or OS) help menu to find anything of value. This time however it info under the topic "What happened to Windows Sidebar?". Kinda strange, I was looking for "How do I completely remove Windows Sidebar?" as opposed to a question that implies I'd miss it.

Windows Sidebar isn't included in this version of Windows. Instead, you can display gadgets on your desktop. For more information, see Desktop gadgets: frequently asked questions.

Perhaps there will still be a way to shut it off some other way, similar to the old method in XP to remove Messenger. But for now, or until someone more clever than I comes along (i.e. someone who doesn't occasionally check "help" in programs, but is instead just wicked smart) I think we'll just have to deal with the fear it's slowly bringing our systems to a crawl.

Re: How to enable and disable windows sidebar program at startup?

As previously mentioned, right clicking the Desktop and going to View and unchecknig Show Desktop Gadgets, turns off the SideBar, also it won't return after a reboot either. Nor is there any sign of it running in the background in Task Manager (Applications/Processes)
