Encrypting Drives with Bitlocker in Windows 7

Encrypting Drives with Bitlocker in Windows 7

USB flash drives are convenient, portable, and very easy to use. But if they are carrying sensitive data then it is important to protect it. Fortunately Windows 7 has the solution: encrypt your documents with an extension of Microsoft's BitLocker technology, and only someone with the password will be able to access it.

Bitlocker is an exclusive feature of Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise. All other Windows 7 editions do not include that feature. Bitlocker can also be used to encrypt partitions or drives that are connected to the computer system so that their data can only be accessed after supplying the password that can decrypt the data. The main difficulty of working with Bitlocker is its limited reach. As Bitlocker is only included in two of the six Windows 7 editions. This means that only those two editions will be able to encrypt and decrypt those drives and portable devices.

Encrypting drives with Bitlocker on the other hand is an easy straightforward process. All you need to do is right-click the device in the Windows 7 operating system and pick the Turn on Bitlocker option from the menu that is popping up. A wizard guiding the user will be displayed. Provide the password to lock the drive and follow the instructions through the wizards.

The data on encrypted drives and portable devices can only be accessed after entering the password that has been used to encrypt the data.
