Windows 8 Editions - Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro & Windows RT

Microsoft just announced the different editions available for its upcoming OS, Windows 8. Unlike its predecessors, Windows Vista and Windows 7, the new OS will have three different flavours similar to soon to be EOL'ed Windows XP.

Windows 8

  • For both x86 and x64
  • Targeted for Home users.
  • Includes almost all of the performance and security improvements of Windows 8 platform.
  • Includes the ability to switch languages on the fly
Windows 8 Pro
  • For both x86 and x64
  • Targeted for enthusiasts and business
  • All improvements plus features for encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity
  • Windows Media Center will be available as an economical “media pack” add-on
Windows RT
  • For ARM powered devices
  • Will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors
  • Support for thin and lightweight form factors
  • Impressive battery life (??)
  • Will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
  • Apps supported based on the new Windows runtime, or WinRT, which was unveiled in September and forms the foundation of a new generation of cloud-enabled, touch-enabled, web-connected apps of all kinds
More Details here.

I dislike this whole redesign. Most users are going to be rather confused.

That may be; but I like the idea of unified OS for PCs and Tablets. And you can easily get rid of the Start Screen.

Btw. Windows 8 will be available to OEMs in June and should be available from retailers by September/October 2012.

Re: Windows 8 Editions - Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro & Windows RT

Well the whole redesign of the OS was for the optimization of the OS,so that it can be used for Touch based as well as non touch based Devices. So for the Touch based PCs/Laptops/Tablets the Modern UI is a perfect solution and for the non touch based PC's the Desktop Mode is always there.
