Greetings to any eyes that view this,
I have an interesting question that I've been dealing with. I just got a nice new rig, and everything works smooth and easy. I have listed specs in profile, but for a short blurb my OS is Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit version, anyhoot, ever since I got the computer (lets say several weeks ago) Windows Media Player has been acting super crazy. Sometimes it will start automatically upon Windows startup. If you try closing the program it will just keep re-opening, continuously. If you then try to see if it is functional it will attempt to play a song, one of the pre installed songs that come with the program, but instead of actually playing it correctly it will play it for 1 sec or so, skip to another song, and so forth. I'm confused about what is going wrong w/ WMP. I know that you can't just "uninstall" it because Microsoft has it as an embedded essential program, but what do I do? I don't even use the program, I would rather use iTunes for my music player. What should I do? I have read that I could delete the HKeys for WMP? Is there anything else? I would like to fix this problem, because at times it ruins a Windows session, or several sessions in a row. Meaning it is making Windows unstable and not fun to work with at all. Worst case scenario wipe hard drive and start anew??? Answers??? |

Re: Windows Media Player on Super Fritz
bakuryu,
Will do on running hijackthis over again, and checking "fix checked" button after those two files. Question on how to "run services.msc and disable the service Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service?" I'll have to go into the black command prompt (old school dos looking) c:>Administrator window to do this? Or from the basic "search" area when hitting Vista logo on startup, insert "run services.msc" and go from there? ... I'll check back in a several hours to see / report on happenings. ~ Subzero_83 |

Re: Windows Media Player on Super Fritz
Also,
Couldn't I just use Hijackthis and check "fix checked" on line 23: O23 - Service: Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (WMPNetworkSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe (file missing) & I know I'm running Wista 64 bit version, but I am seeing, looking through Hijackthis, several instances of Windows 32 files missing; what do you think of this? Improper installation of OS before I got it? Or in the instances of Win - 32 missing a good thing because Win -64 has replaced that function(s)? "Files Missing" = O23 - Service: @comres.dll,-2797 (MSDTC) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\System32\msdtc.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\System32\netlogon.dll,-102 (Netlogon) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: NVIDIA Display Driver Service (nvsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\nvvsvc.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\psbase.dll,-300 (ProtectedStorage) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\Locator.exe,-2 (RpcLocator) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\locator.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\samsrv.dll,-1 (SamSs) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\SLsvc.exe,-101 (slsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\SLsvc.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\snmptrap.exe,-3 (SNMPTRAP) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\System32\snmptrap.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\spoolsv.exe,-1 (Spooler) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\ui0detect.exe,-101 (UI0Detect) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\UI0Detect.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\vds.exe,-100 (vds) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\System32\vds.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\vssvc.exe,-102 (VSS) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\vssvc.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\wbengine.exe,-104 (wbengine) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\wbengine.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: @%Systemroot%\system32\wbem\wmiapsrv.exe,-110 (wmiApSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\wbem\WmiApSrv.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (WMPNetworkSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe (file missing) What, if anything, should I do about all those "files missing" threads? Will that too lead to functionality issues withing Windows? Will doing a Windows update fix, or should I leave as is? |

Mr. Moderator,
I have only had several Windows sessions after the fix, but so far so good. Will report back if otherwise. If the status quo remains the same I would greatly have to thank you for your help, your time, and proceed to add another score to your rep power! Cheers, Subzero_83 EDIT :: Bakuryu, Looks like I wrote too soon! Probably about 15 - 20 min. after I was done writing replies to posting here problem persists, same as before. Starting to get a little perplexed.... Hmm., what to do next? Bakuryu, So after doing everything that you were able to guide me to the problem actually does persist. I think we might have overlooked automatic startup of WMP 11, and therefore I went into msconfig and removed it from starting up, when Vista begins its session. I'm about to do a restart, yet again, and see results, if any. Other thoughts on other places to check / go - to fix issue that prevails? Should I consider moving on up and removing WMP 11 by going to WMP 12 beta? Or is that not worth it? (If the problem in your estimation is worrisome) Do you think the problem could be fixed by just upgrading to a clean version of Windows 7 beta version? Re: Windows Media Player on Super Fritz
Since the problem still persists, it looks like some application is trying to play some media files automatically.
Since you don't use Windows Media Player, go to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player and rename the wmplayer.exe file to wmplayer.exe.bak That should stop Windows Media Player from executing. |
