Missing drive icon
Hi! I've been changing icons lately, just for fun. I've changed icons for folders and system files. Instead of doing it manually, I downloaded and installed a program called AcvivIcons. Everything was going well, but yesterday I noticed the icon for L: (I've got 2 partitions: C and L) was missing. I must have done something wrong while I was messing arround with ActivIcons, but I don't know what. I found this forum looking for answers. There's a very interesting guide/tutorial written by Vishal Gupta about Resource Hacker. I downloaded it and played with shell32.dll. I'm a little affraid of clicking any aply or OK button, you know (I'm nothing but a computer user). In ResHacker I opened shell32.dll. In Icon, I looked folders 6 to 11 (supposed drive icons) and they are all missing. In IconGroup, folders 8 and 9 (hard drive icon groups) seem to be OK. I've changed nothing (just describing). Also, I ran regedit. In LocalMachine-Software-Windows-CurrentVersion-Explorer-DriveIcons there's a folder called L (none for C) with 2 more in it, DefaultIcon and DefaultLabel. I've changed nothing (just describing). Also, in L: there's an autorun file with these lines: [autorun] icon=hard_disk.ico [activicons] save=1 Maybe I'm giving you too much useless information and I'm skipping the real useful things to say. Thank you. PS: my OS is Windows XP with SP3. PS2: excuse my english (not my native language).

Re: Missing drive icon
In spanish it is (valor no establecido). I suppose I could translate it as (value not stablished) or (data not defined).

Re: Missing drive icon
where is the ico file located that you want as L drive icon ? You need to change the data for the value name default in registry location :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ DriveIcons\ L\ DefaultIcon like c:\icons\drive.ico etc |

Re: Missing drive icon
Thanks for answering, but it hasn't worked. I've tried all kinds of combinations with capital letters and without them, with and without spaces after slashes, rebooting after any change, but that icon is still missing (well, actually it's not missing: it was replaced by the default icon, the one Windows uses to say I don't know what is this).
¿Any more ideas? Thanks. [note to myself: don't ever mess arround again with stupid programs you find in the internet; ask someone who knows things like what is a .dll file or why do I need DNS' ] |

Re: Missing drive icon
DONE!
![]() I erased the L: folder in the registry DriveIcons (backup first, of course) and the autorun file in the L: root, and the old icon came back. Thanks for the help, bakuryu. I've learnt a lot. Let the Regedit be with you. |
