AutoRun/Play Windows XP SP1

Hi Guys,

Quick questions really, I have added in a registry key that will disable the Autorun/Play feature for all Drives. I then reboot the workstation and plug in and it freezes or reboots. Which is bad, does anyone know if certain registry keys are Service Pack based, if that is the case would it do the freeze and reboot?

Ta

Re: AutoRun/Play Windows XP SP1

1) "I have added in a registry key that will disable the Autorun/Play"
You didn't have to add a registry key to disable this. Simply you could have opened Windows Explorer, right clicked on the drive and clicked "Properties". In the dialogue box there's an AutoPlay tab where you can select the "Select an action to perform" circle and scroll down the list and select the "Take no action" option. Though you would have to do this on all the drives that you want this disabled on.

2) "does anyone know if certain registry keys are Service Pack based"

No sir, they are not service pack based. Some of the data stored in the registry keys may be different throughout service packs, but where the keys are stored and what their functions do are still the same.

3) "if that is the case would it do the freeze and reboot?"
Since this is not the case, incorrect changes or sometimes changes at all in the registry can cause those problems. Now my question for you is what are you doing when these freezes and reboots happen?

To be honest with you, if possible, I would go back before the change and see if the problem still occurs. If not then I would disable AutoPlay the way I mentioned above on each drive you wish to do so on and hope the system doesn't start crashing again. If it does then you definitely have another problem going on.

Another thing to think about is that there could be a problem linked somehow with AutoPlay itself, such as something being corrupted or screwed on Windows. For instance, think of it like this:

1) AutoPlay drive... yes/no?
2) Registry key says no!
3) Whatever in windows that initializes or uses that key says "I don't understand 'no', OMG what to do???" *CRASH*

Let us know how it goes!
