I did it once. I will never do it again and will never recommend anyone do it.
Need more space? Storage is cheaper every day. Buy another HD or back-up data and remove from existing space. |

Compressing files on a hard rive to save space does NOT improve speed, infact it reduces speed. The best use for this method of storing data is for archives (i.e files that you do not need to access on a regular basis, backups, etc). It does free up additional space, but I would not reccomend for use on your active data storage.

Just to add to tbam88 the compress/uncompress process will add some delay to your read/write access to your disk. Are you asking just for computing curiosity or are you focusing on an specific commercially available product?
Some software tools claim to compress and help you in speed but their comparison on regards to speed is usually considering other compressing tools and not comparing it against a native file system. |

Disk wide file compression will impact drive performance, but unless you are very low on disk space it should be negligible. The drive compression built into Windows is intelligent enough to avoid compressing critical system files, files that are accessed very frequently and other areas of the disk that would impact performance greatly. The best option is to buy a larger hard drive, but there is nothing wrong with trying out compression until you do. good luck |

Good that your asking just out of curiosity and are not actually needing to do such a procedure.
Compression will definitely reduce your hdd's response times because when your OS wants to access compressed files it will have to decompress to a temporarily folder, launch the program/file and after closing deleting files whitin the temp folder. It may have been useful years ago when storage space was critical but nowadays hdd's are extremely cheap. |
