Programs Icons changed to Paper with folded corner - In DIRE need of help

I am unsure how this happened but this is what is happening to me.

I was downloading something from the net, and then all of a sudden most of my icons on my desktop changed to just the paper with the folded corner.

The programs that did this are.

Xfire.
1964 (Nintendo 64 emulator)
Game Booster
ijji Reactor

Also...

In the task bar, the following programs also have just the folded paper

Mozilla
Outlook
iTunes
Skype
Yahoo Messenger
Word
Powerpoint
Excel
Media Player
Media Center

Now....

When I click on the programs listed above, ie Word. this is the status box i get...

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office12\WINWORD.EXE

Application not found.

With other programs the Open With box pops up and I have NO clue which programs to select to try and open the application with.

I have tired to run a system restore, but when I click on that in the start bar....I get the Open With box....

I just really could use any help that you all can provide.

Thank you.

Re: In DIRE need of help

Hi,
I'm not the expert on operating systems that many others are, but I'd suggest posting some facts about your machine to help people get a handle on the problem.
EG: Operating system name and version
make and model of computer
amount of ram
hard disk size and how full it is.
Just for starters, you might try doing a search for winword.exe and see if it can be found on your machine anywhere.
I have seen those symptoms before, several years ago on an older machine of mine when I filled the hard drive and Windows ran out of space for swapping out of memory to disk.
But that may not be your problem; some symptoms have more than one potential cause.

Re: Programs Icons changed to Paper with folded corner - In DIRE need of help

It looks like a corrupted .exe file association. The following solution might work for you.

1. Download the file exe-file-extension-fix-hkcu.reg and save it in your desktop.

2. Double click on it to merge it to the registry. All this registry merge will do is remove the custom exe association.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\UserChoice]
3. Reboot and see if the programs are working.

Post back if you still have the problems. Ensure that you have a good antivirus installed and it's up to date.
