I haven't seen THIS one, before...Ownership in XP not taking!
Hi, all...been looking for a solution to this one for a little while and stumbled across y'all's forums. After looking around and reading several posts, it seems like a pretty knowledgable crew, so here goes:
On an FX-51 (1Gb RAM; XP SP3 - current patches/security updates), my OS install was getting buggy, so I figured it was time for a clean-out and reinstall. I went through and lifted all the permissions on my data drives (I run an EIDE OS drive and 2 SATA data drives), opening them up. I've done tech work for a while, and I knew about the SID changing on a new install. Go me! Yea! Well, I missed one of my stupid folders when I did. Go me...not so much! Boo! "No problem," I thought, "I'll go take ownership of the files and everything'll be alright." This was about the last time normality entered the picture. I went in to take ownership and did, no problem. However, when I try to access anything in the folder, I still get slapped with, "Access denied." I've made sure the permissions are all set. Security is as open as it can be, at this point. I care less about anyone seeing my work than I do about just being to see it, myself!! When I look at the folder, subfolders and individual docs, I'm listed as the owner on all of them, yet I still can't access any of it. AAARRGGGHHH!! I'm the admin of the box, I've tried normal and safe modes, yet still nothing. Any thoughts on what I should be trying next, anyone? Heck, I even tried to delete the files, thinking, "Well, if it's hopeless, at least I can reclaim the disk space." Again, nothing. Access denied, and I mean DENIED!! It's like I have a 30-gig hole in my HD where my data used to be. My thanks in advance to any who can help me with this bugger! ![]() |

well, 4 what its worth.. if youre resigned to the fact you`ve lost your data, a full re-install is required... re-partition and re-install,

Re: I haven't seen THIS one, before...Ownership in XP not taking!
Well, yeah...I figured I could always just nuke it and reclaim, but I thought I'd see if there wasn't anything else I could do to get around this.
I'd never seen it, before, and thus, I worry that it could happen again. If it did, I might actually lose data that IS dear to me, and although I back up pretty frequently, I'd like to at least be able to do more than throw my hands up and proclaim it this a datality. If there's nothing for it, there's nothing for it, I guess. Thanks for the time, anyway. |

Try this..
Turn off Simple File Sharing: Click Start, and then click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab. Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab. In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box. Click OK. Good Luck!!

Re: I haven't seen THIS one, before...Ownership in XP not taking!
Hey, Albin...thanks for the thought, but I'm not using SFS to begin with. I've gone through the procedure to take ownership of every folder, a hundred different files and in every combination of including and excluding subfolder, parental permissions, child permissions, etc.--by all accounts and what my security screens show, my account (which has Admin rights) IS the owner of the files. I've tried logging in as the Admin, logging in Safe Mode as myself, as Admin and under a totally new account I created with Admin rights. Zip, zilch, nada. Dangit. It shows whichever account I log in with as the owner of the files, with full rights.
Apparently, though, the files haven't gotten the memo. Anytime I try to access them, they still give me the old, "Access denied," as if I were an unprivileged account. *SIGH* I'm ready to chuck it all and just format the disk to reclaim the space. My new box arrives tomorrow with Vista-64 on it, anyway... ![]() |
