Hi there.
My friend's computer had loads of issues so we decided to format the hard drive and load windows xp SP3.All is ok except for 2 things; 1. We cannot install any programs...any .msi install package comes up with the error "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package" error 1619. 2. We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel. Cannot start the service either. I have done loads of research and have come to a halt as nothing seems to fix the problems. I have done a validation check through microsoft.com and the OS shows up as 'genuine'. I just think something went wrong during installation and a file is missing or something. Please help. Code:

Re: New xp sp3 install...cannot install programs and Security?Firewall start problem
Try this
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and click on the Services Icon. Now look for a entry called: Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing. and set it to Automatic and Apply and reboot and it will load automatically. If you still get the problem, Try this and this if the above doesnot help Good Luck!!

Re: New xp sp3 install...cannot install programs and Security?Firewall start problem
Quote:
1. Go to "Start" -> "Run" , type "services.msc" and press on "Enter" button. 2. Double-click on the service named "Windows Installer". 3. Check the value in the "Startup type:" field. If it's currently set to "Disabled", then that is the problem. Change it by selecting "Manual" from the drop-down box. If that doesnot helps, then try this WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe is the file for XP sp3. Try to download and install this from the below link. if still you get the problem, try the below to re-register MSI 1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:. 2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER. 3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run". 4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER. Good Luck!!

Re: New xp sp3 install...cannot install programs and Security?Firewall start problem
Follow this step :
1) Click on the start go to run type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER. 2) In the run Type "services.msc" and press Enter 3) Find the windows installer and check it to "manual and click Start once" It will work Happiness is the key to success Atul |

Re: New xp sp3 install...cannot install programs and Security?Firewall start problem
Nah didnt fix the problem...I honestly think the computer is too old to accept all this new stuff...we reinstalled windows (with another one along side it) and there was NO PROBLEM with the other computer....I think it will be easier to throw it away and get another.
Thanks |

Re: New xp sp3 install...cannot install programs and Security?Firewall start problem
Just increase your RAM to 1GB or 1.5GB, and a new harddisk
