Re: How long did you use XP for?

@Davnel I really must try your method of swapping boot disks, it would save me the headaches every time I try multi-booting xD

Re: How long did you use XP for?

I am using XP from last 6 years.

Didn't faced any issues except some virus problem and i resolved all of them.

Windows XP is very user friendly than Windows 7.

The trick is to install an Antec Easy Sata adapter (your local Staples might have some - they're about $30) in your computer front panel (one of the 5-1/4" slots). The adapter connects to the drive 0 SATA cable. Once installed, simply plug in a drive, fire up the machine, and install whatever you like on it. Swapping drives involves rebooting or shutting down between drives. DO NOT swap drives and then reboot, it messes up the new drive. You get so you can swap them during POST, but you gotta be fast.

Re: How long did you use XP for?

Not bad, not bad. Wouldn't get 'em from Staples tho, in the UK they are pretty overpriced! xD Could probably get them from Amazon or Scan tho. I might try to see if I can find a spare cage for my laptop, then I could do the same trick on the move if need be

Re: How long did you use XP for?

They are becoming hard to find here. I think Antec discontinued them.
As for the laptop, I thought about that approach, but changing the hard disk is such a pain that I went with dual-boot, XP and W7, on it with a 750GB drive. Works OK.

Re: How long did you use XP for?

I'm having one of my crazy ideas...

One could build a circuit to connect/disconnect drives electronically (rather than physically), with some sort of safety lock so that it can only be switched while the system is off, or even have different power switches for each OS? I'm gonna have to try this over summer now xD

Re: How long did you use XP for?

In theory, you can "hot-swap" the drives if you have AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enabled in the BIOS. I've never tried it.

Actually, when they were still on the market, Staples had them cheaper than Newegg ($19.95 vs $29.95). Some Staples stores might still have one or two floating around somewhere. They weren't very popular. I guess people hadn't figured out (or weren't interested in) the OS swap scheme and Antec dropped the line. Too bad - they work great. Makes changing to Linux or XP a snap. That's why my data drive is separate. Same data for all OSs.

BTW, be very careful with Windows 8. It uses a new file system that, from the standpoint of Win 7 or XP, corrupts the data disk. I keep a separate data partition ON THE WIN 8 disk and remove the normal data disk - which is also in an Antec carrier.

As an aside, changing the HD in my laptop involves removing a cover (2 screws) removing the drive bracket (2 more screws) and inserting the new drive, also in a bracket - which one needs to obtain from the manufacturer - then closing it back up. Total time - 3 minutes.

Re: How long did you use XP for?

I installed Win8 on my laptop and have vowed to myself NEVER EVER to use it on anything else ever again unless I see some major changes. As to the laptop HDD caddies, they shouldn't be too hard to fabricate? I reckon I could make ones for mine with nothing but a sheet of mild steel (or aluminium), some folding bars, a drill and a can of spray paint

If you have the same data drive for all OSs, what format do you use? I know NTFS works in Linux in theory but I have had issues with it before (and don't get me started trying to read ext3/4/5 on Win).

NO, NTFS seems to work well with any Debian derivative. I haven't tried it with Slack or BSD yet. Again, the only problem I've had is trying to use the Win 7 / XP data disk with Win 8. If I go back to Win 7 or XP, they want to do a scan and end up destroying the data disk. Sure hope Micro$oft fixes that or I can't use Win 8 as I do others.
