Ahh I guess NTFS support has improved since I last used Linux properly then.

Re: How long did you use XP for?

I am still using XP on my little netbook, only because the specifications is very low and probably wouldn't support Windows 7. When XP is no longer supported I will consider installing an old version of Ubuntu. You can't install much on an 8GB netbook though!

Thanks!

Is Linux good for normal PC users?
I thought it is for professions.
I'm having Linux system installed on my PC at work, but never used.
So things on Linux are different? such as office?

I think so, especially now that almost everything is done on the Web, it actually makes very little difference which OS you use (Firefox works just the same on any OS ) it's even starting to become a gaming platform (SteamOS)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux, among others, has been used for servers, workstations and other professional applications for a long long time. IMO Windows and Mac are only just catching up in terms of security. Also Linux's versatility is unbeatable (to a programmer)

Is this just your system specifically or the whole infrastructure?

Sure, but not much. Menus and so on work slightly differently, but I find it just as intuitive to use as Windows, if not more so. Terminal is especially nice compared to CMD in Windows - e.g. in Ubuntu or other Debian based distros you can install software by simply opening Terminal, typing
Code:
sudo apt-get install <software-package-name>
and hitting enter.

Most paid-for software, such as MSOffice, Adobe CS, AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc. aren't supported on Linux (you can use Wine to run them inside a virtual shell but I always found that to be an enormous PITA), so instead you can use free software packages like openOffice/LibreOffice, GIMP, Blender and so on. When I still used Ubuntu Linux as my main OS I often faced compatibility issues, but that was over five years ago, I believe both the OS and the software have come a long way since then.
