Re: How can i recover windows password?

If you REALLY want to secure the machine, set a boot password in the BIOS, then set an access password for the BIOS itself. This prevents booting PERIOD. No DVDs, no USB sticks, no nothin'. The only way out is to clear CMOS memory.

Re: How can i recover windows password?

Found myself in the same position recently, and discovered this on the web:

How To Reset a Windows 7 Password

It works great, and took me maybe 10 minutes to completely reset my password without knowing the original one. One thing to keep in mind, my machine had been set up to autologin which, I think, made the process easier, but it did work.

Re: How can i recover windows password?

You might consider creating a password reset disk on a flash drive in User Accounts. Of course, this can be lost or stolen, with disastrous results

I've been doing some serious thinking about computer security lately. There are really two types that need consideration. First there's the security of your system from external threats. You need a good hardware firewall, like a good router, that's set up properly, such as turning off UPNP in the router, and setting up a good DNS server like OpenDNS. You also need to establish procedures like never opening email attachments from someone you don't know, or something you didn't request yourself. For example, if you get an email, purporting to be from your bank, and asking for verification or information. DO NOT RESPOND. Instead, call your bank directly or manually log into their web site and ask what they want. It's always better to lean toward suspicion than to just blindly jump in. That path leads to infections or worse.

The second consideration is internal security. If you live alone and have few visitors that would have physical access to your system, there's little reason to use passwords or any extraordinary security. You are, after all, your own administrator, and nobody else has access to the system.

If, on the other hand, you live in a busy apartment or dorm, with room mates or lots of people in and out, by all means lock that machine down. I'd include a password to boot up, and a password to access the BIOS setup routine, in addition to a password for your operating system. The boot password prevents even booting from disks or USB sticks.

The level of internal security depends a lot on your circumstances, but convenience plays a large role, especially if you are the only one with access.
