Wierdness duel monitor prob

Im not the brightest crayon in the box or the sharpest. But i am not completely incompetant. thats why this is so frustrating.

I am trying to hook up an hd tv as a duel mointor set up for my pc. Everytime i reboot the hd tv has a red flickering screen and the main mointor boots normally. after the OS has loaded the hd tv tells me it is not recieving a signal. and the main monitor still operates as though it has an extended desktop.

So far i have:
1. swaped the HDMI to make sure its working
2. plugged the monitor directly to tv as hdmi and VGA both time it worked fine.
3. verified settings for display on both the graphics card and OS I have both extended the desktop and made sure that the resolution is optimal for the TV
4. made sure that all the latest drivers were loaded for the vid card. its an AMD radeon something or other(sorry at work atm dont have that info)

If it helps as another clue, the sound is not going through the TV either. even if i chose it as a speaker source. the TV is however being picked up by the OS. It's wierd because it gets some of the signal when loading but then cuts out.

Please help! You could be the bright crayon!
