Yeah not sure why I mentioned the converters tbh, I musta been tired

2nd hand drive ought to be cheap as nails from eBay or wherever.

Rather shameful that the main distros of Linux don't seem to available on CD's anymore-it wasn't long ago when you could get stripped-down distros to fit on a CD.

Anyway, it is possible to install Linux without using a disc OR a USB drive; of course for Ubuntu you can just use Wubi but it is a little more complicated with Mint:

Still can. Most of the more popular distros come in a "network" install form that uses the internet as a source for most of the software. If you have a slow internet connection it may take a while, however.

BTW, the posting that describes his system is here:

I checked and Dell actually did sell a system in his configuration, Celeron, CD-only, 512MB, etc. The mobo might have graphics on it from the 845 chipset, or, at least, there's an HD-15 connector in the shield.

Hm. Well they certainly aren't as easy to find as they used to be-I suppose the assumption is that everyone has a DVD drive these days.

That's one of the reasons I suggested going back a few releases. Debian 4 or 5 will work fine on his system, but most of the modern hardware isn't supported. I would pick a distro released no later than 2006 or so. Most distro archives have all of the previous releases available.

For example, Linux Mint offers their previous releases going all the way back to version 1.0 Beta, here:

Enjoy.
