Basically, burn the ISO to a blank DVD instead.

Also, make sure that the boot priorities in the BIOS configuration boot from the DVD/CD Drive before the hard drive.

Re: XP OR Linux Will not install on my dell dimension 2400 using a USB I get a BSOD??

OK, first off this is a Pentium 4 system, which (stock) has 512MB RAM a 120GB HDD, one CD-RW /DVDROM drive, and onboard graphics built into the Intel 845 chipset - all according to a 2004 CNET review. Intel's 845 chipset supports USB 2.0 so booting from USB should be possible.

Your BSOD problem, at this point could be any of 1000 things. Does the machine boot on ANYTHING? Can you get it to boot from the hard disk? Since the optical drive will read (and perhaps boot from) a DVD, burn one on another machine for both operating systems you want to install. In BIOS setup, make sure the boot priority goes CD/DVD then HDD, or, if allowed, USBHDD then CD/DVD, then HDD. I'd try the DVD approach first, just to make sure the machine is functional.

If all of that fails, and you get BSODs regardless, you have a serious problem that needs expert service. For a 10 year old machine, it might not be worth it.

BTW, IF the machine will boot from USB (you gotta set it up in BIOS), it will also boot from your external DVD drive - but you don't need it. Your optical drive will read DVDs, it just won't write them.

If it does run, I wouldn't go much more modern than Debian 4 or maybe 5 or something based on them, or one of the tiny versions of Linux. You just don't have the hardware to support the high end stuff.

If you do get it running on XP, Dell can still provide drivers, etc., for that machine.

Ya its running XP....i Am typing to u now on my 2400

I just want to install Linux mint and I need a USB for that, the DVD drive I have is external wont work, The internal is CD only wont read DVDs. Its not a bad PC now that I have stuck in 2BG of new RAM & Have a Readeon HD2500 As my GPU... i Am waiting on the P4 too arrive from eBay. It has a bog standard crap Intel Celron in there at the mo, If I have more CPU power I think it would be a OK day to day PC. Until I finish my build.

Re: XP OR Linux Will not install on my dell dimension 2400 using a USB I get a BSOD??

Great. If you intend to keep this machine and use it, the first thing I'd do is spend $20 and replace the optical drive. You can get a good Samsung or Liteon cd/dvd writer for 17.95 to 21.95 from Newegg. Your machine will support it. Definitely replace the Celeron with a P4. If you are using a separate graphics card, make sure the internal GPU is disabled in BIOS (or maybe by jumper on the mobo) or conflicts will occur. That might be part of your USB BSOD problem.

Re: XP OR Linux Will not install on my dell dimension 2400 using a USB I get a BSOD??

I'll add one more thing: If you can find it, maybe at Dell, update the BIOS to the latest for that board. The one you have now is dated 2003, and might not cover some important hardware. Also, a 2003 mobo might be IDE only, so take that into consideration if you replace drives.

I just checked here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/...dimension-2400

Your BIOS is one level off, there's an update dated 12/19/2003
Also, that page has most of the drivers and manuals for your machine.

^^ You can get IDE/sata converters from Amazon pretty cheaply, in my experience they work fine with Windows although my Linux system wouldn't even boot with them :/

I have the latest BIOS installed already A05 so Its not that?
All of my drivers are def upto date so I cant see the problem there
either... It might just look like im going to have to either buy a DVD Drive that will install Linux or just stick with a slow XP until I can afford to finish my new build.
