Windows XP

No Sound/Sound Device

Before we start: I'm usually good at this. Please leave out the suggestions like "restart", "are you plugged in the right hole", yeah.

Okay, that said

My friend has an ollllld laptop.

Win XP Pro version 2002 Sv Pack 3 Intel Pentium M

"No Audio Device", everything greyed out.

Recognized "Hardware" on S&A Device list:
Slimtype Combo DVD/CD
Avance AC97 Audio
Audio Codecs
Legacy AUdio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs

All supposedly working correctly.

Tried to update the drivers on Avance. The computer bluescreened with a "shut down to prevent damage"; immediately repeated on reboot. Reverted back to an earlier setting to get rid of it.

Device Manager > System > System Speakers has no drivers associated with it, and none found if I go to look it up. Curiously, I HAVE gotten some system sounds to work (rather than a "bing" alert I get a buzz through the earpiece, which otherwise interprets no sounds.) I took this as a sign the sound card might not be totally toasted so I tried to play a MIDI file since that plays raw through the soundcard, but only got an error that there was no audio device.

Now I admit this is an OLD laptop (no default speakers even on it, just a sound jack--but it's 1.2 gz so it's not a dinosaur), and it's been a while since I fuddled with WinXP but I'm kind of curious what I'm missing.
