ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

Saw someone in the SMS Tools have this issue also, so at least i am not
alone.

I am testing BDD 2007 ZTI on mainly Virtual Machines and Dell D600s and I
can not get the Partition action to complete on its own. It just hangs there
for hours if i let it. Sometime if i go to the labshell and click the mouse
or manually go into diskpart, it will start up again, but not consistently.
If i look at taskmgr, diskpart is running. if i maunally do the steps inthe
ZTIDiskpart.txt (default) it works fine . I have tried some custom tasks to
do the same thing, basically bypassing the ZTIDiskpart.wsf and it doesn't
work either. I copied the .cmd and txt files to the CD and manaully ran them
locally and it worked.

i am trying to deploy XP SP2 with WinPE 2005 source and SMS OSD. These are
just new computer deploys at this point. I have literally spent 3 days
straight trying to get this to work and am getting no where...

Help!?

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

It's a timing issue on some disks and probably due to the performance of
some of the virtual machines.

The ztidiskpart.wsf has a sleep in it to account for that but on some
machines it just isn't long enough.

Change this line in ztidiskpart.wsf

WScript.Sleep 5000

Change it to something like 10000 for a 10 sec delay or 30000 for a 30 sec
delay.

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

No dice. I upped it to 2 minutes and no change. It does work if there are no
existing partitions. If i am at a labshell prompt and try and go to the c
drive, it says it is not a valid drive. If i reboot and check again, the
Previous partition with C: content is still there. checking taskmgr during
this shows diskpart.exe and dmadmin.exe running but nothing is using any CPU.

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

Anyone else deploying XP with BDD 2007? from what i have heard it probably
isn't an issue with Vista, but i 'm not really to that point yet. Any other
input from the BDD guys? I'm getting desperate here.

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

I know this isn't what you want to hear but can you open a case on this?
We've seen this only in very rare circumstances and haven't been able to
narrow down exactly what the problem is.

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

Will do. I seem to have had a little luck working around it by adding a
custom diskpart action in OSD rather than the BDD Task sequence. i disabled
the Partition action in the preinstall phase in the build sequence, but added
it to the OSD preintsall phase before the ZTI.vbs runs. Then i put a format
action in the task sequence that formats it. Seemed to work this way but
when I tried a custom action in the task sequnce to do the same thing, it
did not work. Hopefully a little more testing will confirm that this can
workaround the issue for all my models.

I am using it with XP. Saw it once or twice but seems OK now. I did
not change anything.

can't seem to find an appropriate "product area" to submit a support request

Hi,

I found a workaround to this issue. Many users seems to have it, since
first versions of BDD...

We've got the same probleme onBDD2.5. The diskpart doesn't fail but
hang during "clean"

We spent long time to try to understand, but we give it away and find
a workaround !!

Regarding to MS, the issue can be corrected by running a batch file
from vbs script with "cmd /c %diskpartscript.cmd%".
But, it wasn't worked for us.
The only working "trick" is to create an AutoIt script compiled in EXE
which move the mouse ! (to keep credibility, users dont see cursor, we
move it outside screen !).

Here is the source script (AutoIt) compiled in heartbeat.exe

$pos = MouseGetPos()
$posX = $pos[0]
$posY = $pos[1]
MouseMove(0,1000,1)
Sleep(5000)
MouseMove(10,1000,1)
Sleep(5000)
MouseMove(0,1000,1)
Sleep(5000)
MouseMove(10,1000,1)
Sleep(5000)
MouseMove(0,1000,1)
Sleep(5000)
MouseMove($posX,$posY,1)

And there is a sample of our ZTI.vbs file:

' First run DISKPART
If objOSD("OSDREFRESH") <> "Y" then

LogInfo sLogFile, "USEREXIT : HeartBeat started. Stayin alive",
LogTypeInfo
CopyLogFile sLogFile, dicUserData
iRetVal = wshShell.Run("""" & sThisScriptDir & "\HeartBeat.exe""",
9, false)
LogInfo sLogFile, "USEREXIT : About to run Diskpart.", LogTypeInfo
CopyLogFile sLogFile, dicUserData
iRetVal = wshShell.Run("CMD.EXE /c """ & sThisScriptDir &
"\diskpart.cmd " & sThisScriptDir & "\ZTIDiskpart.txt""", 4, true)
End If

If iRetVal <> Success then
LogInfo sLogFile, "USEREXIT: ERROR - Diskpart returned
a non-zero return code, rc = " & iRetVal, LogTypeError
UserExit = iRetVal
EXIT FUNCTION
End if

' Wait a few seconds
WScript.Sleep 5000

Good luck, let me know if it's work for you.

Re: ZTI Diskpart partition action hangs

Has this issue been resolved by Microsoft yet? I'm experiencing the problem
on most of my DELL Optiplex GX620 and 745 models
