Default chkdsk stops working

hello,
I need some help with chkdsk. I had the blue screen of death with the code
c0000218..... I have been through this sight and tried everything short of a
clean install, however I do not want to waste any more time if someone could
tell if my hard drive is junk. I ran chdsk 2-3 times, this last time from the
recovery console and it has been stuck at 56% for at least 20 hours. The
first time it hung up I restarted the computer after about 3 hours.

Thank you,
Bob

Download and run the hard drive mfg's diagnostic utility and run it, that
will tell you whether or not the drive is bad. Visit the drive mfg's website
for said utility.

Bob

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797160.aspx

0xC0000218: UNKNOWN_HARD_ERROR
A necessary Registry hive file couldn't be loaded. The file may be
corrupt or missing (requiring either an Emergency Repair Disk or a
Windows reinstallation). The Registry files may have been corrupted
because of hard disk corruption or some other hardware problem. A driver
may have corrupted the Registry data while loading into memory, or the
memory where the Registry is loading may have a parity error (turn off
the external cache and check the physical RAM).

David's suggestion is a good one. If the hard drive cannot be booted you may
still be able to access and recover data files by placing the hard drive in
an external cradle and connecting it to a working computer.

Have you tried the steps that are on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. Give that a shot and let us
know how things worked out.

To Dave B.
Thanks for the tip, I ran the diagnostic from Western digital for my drive,
after 11 hours it came back with an error message that stated Too many bad
sectors. I will now begin research as what to do next.

To Roy
Thank you fo rthe link, but after reading the article 307545 I noticed this
does not apply to OEM versions of XP pro, which I have. So once I figure out
if I can continue the use of my hard drive (see above) I will be forced to do
a clean install.

To Gerry,
Thank you fo the links, very good insight to what is going on with my error
message.

Thank you.
Bob

Your drive needs to be replaced, it's shot.
