Default Inconstant netlogon folders

Hi All,

We have a small issue that I have been fighting with for the last 3 days and
getting nowhere.

Background. I want to add a domain wide MSI file for desktop tattooing but
the only domain wide share is the netlogon folder. So created the desktop
tattoo folder and placed the MSI inside. The hub site has 4 DC servers but
only the one server that I placed the file in copied the file to netlogon
share. The other 3 DC servers created the folder but not the file.

On check the file permissions against another working domain in our forest I
fixed the file permissions as there was an unresolved SID.

Leaving the domain overnight to replicate out the changes I came back in the
morning to find all the DC servers had the folder but not the MSI file. I
then done an non authorith (bad spelling) restore by following

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315457

Still no joy...

I have downloaded sonar from Microsoft with little no insight.

HELP ....

Andrew

Hello Andrew

Check this doc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296944

Pay attention to the SYSVOL filter section, remove the *.msi from the filter
strin if it exists. The fact the the folder repl's, makes me think the filter
is configured to not repl MSI files.

What forest/domain functional mode is you environment running? Download MS
Sonar if you need more info on the FRS(Sysvol errors), even better, install
MS ultrasound and it generally will provide a path to a whitepaper on an
exact fix if the are errors.

If you copy a *.doc file into the same folder as the MSI, does it replicate?

Default RE: Inconstant netlogon folders

Hi Again Andrew

It is also a good practice not to clutter the SYSVOL(Netlogon) share with
program installation files, rather keep to scipts and logon data in sysvol
and the smaller the files the better. The ADRAP snapshot tools flags any
files over 10MB in the SYSVOL as a problem. If this MSI and future files are
going to be large, create a DFS (Distributed File System). The advantages of
a DFS as opposed to an FRS, are ability to have differing replication
schedules than the AD replication configs, as the SYSVOL replicates as per AD
settings, you can set DFS repl for once a DAY at night and the DFS share does
not even have to be on a Domain Controller at each site. Any 2003 Member
server will do, like an SMS/MOM box.

You can still use Sonar/Utlrasound from Microsoft (Free Downloads) to
monitor DFS repl

Also, if you keep SYSVOL to a minimum, DCPROMO's complete FRS replication
much faster and then advertise themselves to the clients sooner.

Also to further reduce the SYSVOL size, follow the steps in this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816662
This reduced a SYSVOL from just under 1GB to 180MB, and the process is simple

Hello Andrew,

Garry gave you already some tips about using the netlogon folder. So just
to get you correct and not misunderstand something it was only the .msi not
replicated, all other content is done?

Hi Garry and Meionolf,

I created a test text file on a downsteam DC server in the netlogon folder
last week for testing. I can see it has repliacated to all the other servers
in that domain. The funny thing is that I have placed our packaged software
has only replacted to a couple of servers. Checking the link from Garry I
can't see any filters for MSI.

Other domains in our forest work with this MSI file so I still believe that
there is other issues but I will apply the filters just in case.

I have installed sonar on the one of the DC's and I can see there

Default Re: Inconstant netlogon folders

Hi Andrew

Tell me if i'm crazy, since the output you posted had all SYSVOLS in
C:\WINDOWS and Not C:WINNT,
that your domain is still running in 2000 native functional level even
though the're all 2003 DC's (by some chance)? (Just Hypothisising)
(2003 AD's DC's of the same domain within the same site replicated changes
from 15 seconds, plus 3 sencond per each ofther DC that shares the sysvol in
that site.
(2000 AD is 5 mins if I recall, I am not going to reaserch an exact, I sure
I have'nt developed memory loss since then. This will explaint why even all
the DC's at the Head Office may not of repl'd
If so, if the repl schedule occurs every 15 mins, and the MSI was to large
to complete sync,
then it would start from 0 and be in this endless cycle until either luck
comes and it narrowly completes before the next repl cycle.
2003 Function Mode does not stop an in progresss repl. But I'm just giving
you more reason the violate the SYSVOL.
What your'e doing is easy practice (now ended as hard) if my theory afore
mentioned is the case. Best Practice is nothing over 10MB
, if you are in 2000 level though leave the DFS for now. Up the level if
this is the case and no more DC's are 2000 or (NT heaven forbid).
Also if this is the case, read
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/322692, on how to up the level's,
but what I posted it here for is so you can read the benefits of LVR - link
value replication in 2003 func mode. 2000 was MVR (Multi),
every time you add 1 member to a group etc..., 2000 AD re-replicated the
entire group, not just the addition of 1 user. Yip -- Painfull.
Since you have such a few DC's (I even did this method on a +- 60 DC Forest)
- go simple, use Robocopy incoporated in a batch file, or VB script,
then schedule the distribution of a new MSI etc, to begin @ night, and you
set it to use manually created distribution shares.

Note: If I have a file, 2KB or 20MB is the sysvol and all I do is change and
attibute like NTFS rights, of hidden/ready only, the entire blob (the whole
file) is rereplication.
That's just some petty info, I get worst after 01H00 which is 15 minutes away

Oh, start getting used to the DFS since 2008 AD native mode domains move
from FRS to DFS, we just keep winning, no more FRS adherence to AD
replSchedules.
I'd say flexibility best underlines the improvment,
PS: From your original post, I love sonar for one reason, no agents require
on each DC, which means no change control meetings/forms.
Remember Sonar as a likening of a snapshot. Is nice, but I lurve Ultrasound,
simple to implement, comes with an MS SQL Database,
and stored an administrator configured amount of history for trend
analysis, I can get to work @ 08H00 and see on Ultrasound that
the WAN link went down @ 21H00 that night, (NOT SONAR) - I got very lazy
with Ultrasound, everytime it flags issues, it had a hyperlink to the exact
fix 99% of the time

Just one more thing, if you would rather manually send the packages to each
DC's SYSVOL via batch/vbs, then make sure you add *.MSI in the FRS filter so
SYSVOL does not get it's nickers in a knot

How Large is the MSI, have you tried a minute sized one as a trouble
shooting step at all. (Please advise how big though, really inerested. DFS
offers some attractive properties during replication,
read the RDC or Remote Differential Compression that only repls changes to
files. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...91(WS.10).aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...s/default.mspx

That's All
Bye for now

Garry,

Thanks for your reply. We have a total of 150 DC across 6 client domains. 6
out of the 7 domains are in 2003 native mode and we have one remaining 2000
domain so our forest is still in 2000 native mode.

We have repackaged bginfo and p***ec into a MSI file and the total size is
around 950Kb so not that big.

I have turned up the logging on the FRS service and still no real pointers
to the issue.

I guess I am going to have to call PSS and book a call with them if I can't
find the cure soon.
