Media Player problems with Nokia phone
Hi,
I am using Windows Media Player (version 11.0.5721.5230) on Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1.2600). I also use a Nokia E90 phone (210.34.75) together with Nokia PC Suite (6.86.9.3). The phone incorporates a built-in memory as well as a removable memory card. My first problem is that Media Player detects the E90 as a new device, and opens a "Windows Media Player - Device Setup" window, every time I connect the phone. Since I continually use Bluetooth, this occurs every single time I return to my desk. Secondly, if I do set up sync with e.g. the built-in memory of the phone (E90 - Phone memory), Media Player apparently renames the entire phone into "E90 - Phone memory". This change affects other software as well. Consequently, the next time I connect, Media Player uses the name "E90 - Phone memory - Phone memory", and so on. If I then sync the memory card, it is named "E90 - Phone memory - Phone memcard". This, of course, is a mess. I have encountered the same issue before, and worked around it by installing and using another media player, such as iTunes. However, this time I thought I would ask whether anyone would be able to suggest a solution. I do not dare hope that Microsoft will suddenly fix their broken software; I will happily settle for a registry hack or other way to make Media Player simply ignore the phone. -- Thor Kottelin |

Since I usually do not use such drives for music storage, the player would be very welcome to ignore them as well. -- Thor Kottelin |

Re: Media Player problems with Nokia phone
The player wants to establish a sync relationship once with each device so it knows why you're inserting it. This is to help grandma. Just finish the dialog and it won't pop that up anymore for that device. There is no global "never sync" flag that I'm aware of: that feature request has been passed along though. -- Speaking for myself only. See for some helpful WMP info. It seems to me that whatever I do, I am unable to get rid of the prompts; they reappear whether I hit Cancel or Finish. If I go further, and actually set up synchronization (such as with an empty kludge list), the naming chaos described in <news:.gbl> occurs. Have I missed something? -- Thor Kottelin |
