audio file conversions

okay. so i buy a cd and it is in wma format. I want to keep the best
fidelity from this disk as possible, so i convert it to a flac. is this
useless? or a good thing.
Also, I convert and store in a seperate folder in wav, so that i can easily
put them on my mp3 player or burn a new disk. Does this all seem sensible?
Or am I losing quality from conversions?
