Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - WM6

Hello all,

I am experiencing the following problem with ActiveSync 4.5 / Windows Mobile
6.0:

When the device (it's an HTC with WM6) is connected to the Desktop PC
through USB, it cannot connect to the internet using Desktop-Pass-Through
internet connection (= using the internet connection that is provided by the
Desktop PC / Laptop computer).

With ActiveSync 4.1 / Windows Mobile 5.0 this always worked without a problem.

After trying one million things and searching the internet for a LONG, LONG
time, I found a post from Edington Watt from the MS Windows Mobile Platform
(Edington, are there ... ??).

This post communicated to me that exactly this problem already appeared when
ActiveSync was upgraded from ActiveSync 4.1 to ActiveSync 4.2.

Together with his post, Edington Watt offered a registry key fix with the
following content:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"AllowLSP"=dword:00000000

This seems to solve the problem for ActiveSync 4.2 but unfortunately NOT for
ActiveSync 4.5 as I have found out ...

Is there anybody who can help ?? (Edington, are you out there ...??)

THIS IS EDINGTON'S ORIGINAL POST:
(from 07/07/2006 on PDAPhoneHome.com)

To all those who have had problems with connecting to the internet from the
device when upgrading from ActiveSync 4.1 to 4.2:

ActiveSync version 4.2 made a change to how it interacts with the Windows
networking stack to use Layered Service Providers (LSPs) on outgoing
Desktop-Pass-Through connections. This allows for improved compatibility in
environments where connections to the internet must be passed through these
LSPs (ISA Proxy is one such example).

Unfortunately, it appears this change has caused some issues for a small
segment of users who have LSPs that interfere with ActiveSync communication.

There is a registry key fix which will essentially remove this change.

Please download and rename the attached text file with the .txt extension to
the .reg extension. In other words, change the file LSPvalue.txt to
LSPvalue.reg. Afterwards, please double click on the newly renamed .reg file
and click on the "Yes" button.

This should resolve your issues.

Thanks,

Edington

RE: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - WM6

Hi Stephan

At first, I'm not good in english.
I found same problem with you. My PDA is ASUS P535 with WM6 and sync with
activesync 4.5

I'm not sure that your HTC has menu like mine

This is my solution.

In Settings-> USB Setting
Select "ActiveSync (Normal mode) instead ActiveSync (Turbo mode) and then
sync with your PC again.

With my experience I can use internet trough active sync with this procedure.
I don't know why? But it's work for me.

RE: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - W

Thank you Maxx, for sharing your experience with me.

Unfortunately for this does not work.

In my HTC's menu I do have a setting option that reminds me a little bit of
yours:

"Settings - Conncections - USB to PC"

There I have the option to check or uncheck a box that is named "extended
network functions" (it's in German, so I have tried to translate it somehow).

I already tried, if it would help to alter this option, but either way works
....

Thank you very much though!

RE: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - W

I'm having this exact same problem

I use an O2 XDA Orbit (HTC P3300 Artemis) and I have recently upgraded from
ActiveSync 4.2 to 4.5 and flashed the phone to O2's official release of
Windows Mobile 6.

Now I find that pocket IE will not connect to the web using the ActiveSync
'pass-through' when connected to my laptop via ActiveSync 4.5.

Opera Mobile also will not connect. Windows Update (pocket version) will not
connect.

However, SBSH's PocketWeather application WILL connect and download weather
updates via the ActiveSync 4.5 connection.

Any ideas?

Bill

RE: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - W

I found this on XDA Developers:

I tried creating myself a registry DWORD called AllowLSP in
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows CE Services but it didnt seem to work.

I then tried changing the settings in ActiveSync 4.5 under File->Connection
Settings->This Computer is connected to, instead of saying "Automatic" I
changed it to "Internet" and now my pass-through on the Orbit works.

I'm not sure what this setting does and what difference Internet/Work
Network/Automatic actually has on the ActiveSync connection?

Re: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - W

For "Advanced network functionality" (RNDIS) connections only, there is a
component which is running on the PC which acts as a NAT (Network address
translation). This code has two endpoints. One faces the device and the
other, the network cards on the PC. There are things called LSP's (Layered
Service Provider) which can inject them self's into the networking layer. In
some cases it can interfere with the PC's DTPT (Desktop pass-through)
service. By default the LSP's are disabled for the device side connection
and enabled for the PC's connection.

In 4.2+ we enabled greater control of both endpoints. The PC's reg key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"AllowLSP"=(dword) can control both endpoints.

AllowLSP Value
Incoming connection
Outgoing connection

00000001 (default)
Bypass LSPs
Use LSPs

00000000 (more compatible)
Bypass LSPs
Bypass LSPs

00000010
Use LSPs
Bypass LSPs

00000011 (more secure)
Use LSPs
Use LSPs

I would try to cycle amongst the four possible settings 0, 1, 2, and 3.

Re: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - WM6

Hi

dont confuse yourselves guys Its pretty simple.

Steps

1: ensure your computer is connected to the internet
2: connect your WM6 device to your computer
3: Wait for active sync to do its thing
4: after sync go to the following menu

File
---> Connection settings
---------> change This computer connects to
The Internet

5: Sync again
6: use the net on your PDA/Smartphone

hope this helps

Re: Desktop-Pass-Through internet connections / ActiveSync 4.5 - WM6

I had a very similar problem.... After a week of looking from here to hell and back, the solution ended up being the following:
My setup:
XP Desktop
Samsung Omina WM 6.1
ActiveSync 45.
Problem:
Two different symptoms (msg you see on pc side)

1) 'Cannot connect with current settings..... blah blah blah: " Error Code 8502006 OR

2)"Server could not be reached...blah blah blah"
Error code: 80072ee2

Final solution was to go to the mobile device under Start->Settings->Connections->Edit Proxy Server
and CLEAR the check box that'S labeled "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet"

The values in this location WAS wireless.cingular.com
When you clear the check box it will go to 'gray' and then clear out after you hit OK.

Everything now works. Sync over the air, Opera, Pocket I.E. and sync via USB or Bluetooth with PC (which syncs to the exchange server)

Hope this helps.

Merry Xmas.
