One of my domain controller crash and lost all data. I still want to used
the same name as the server that crash.

I follow the metadata clean up article by microsoft but it get this error. I
am using Windows 2003 sp1.

ntdsutil: metadata cleanup
metadata cleanup: remove selected sever CN=ANIMO-FTA,OU=Domain
Controllers,DC=si
s,DC=animo,DC=org
Error 80070057 parsing input - illegal syntax?
metadata cleanup:

What can i do the erase the metadata and use the same name as the previous
server

Jimmy,

Glad that it worked for you. You might have to go into Active Directory
Sites and Services and delete the server object. Now, where do you do this?
Open up ADSS. Then double click on SITES. Then double-click on
Default-First-Site-Name (or whatever you might have renamed it....) and then
double-click on SERVERS. You should see the object for the computer that is
no longer a Domain Controller. Delete it.

Additionally, if this Domain Controller was also a DNS Server and/or a WINS
Server then you might have to modify the Options in your DHCP and remove the
IP Address for the now-dead server...

Jimmy,

Take a look at these two links:

http://www.petri.co.il/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

Follow them exactly....

Essentially, what you need to do is to connect (bind is often used in this
connect) to an existing Domain Controller in your environment and then
perform the cleanup of the dead DC. A lot of people make the mistake of
connecting (again, binding would be the technically correct term here) to
the dead DC and when they try to delete it they are given an error message
(different from the one that you are seeing....). I mention this because a
lot of people make this mistake...

HTH,

Cary
